• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Did the Ignition Crank snout Taper Change ?

1982 XC 430

Husqvarna
AA Class
I am assembling a 250 Franken Motor of various Parts. The Main Cases look to be 84, the Trans is 83 CR, the Crank is a 84+ LC and the Cylinder is a 84 AC. So I went to Lap the internal Rotor on to the Crank Snout and found I had a miss match. The Snout is to small. I got the Ignition from a very well known source of parts here on the forum, and I have no doubt that its a Husqvarna one. When they went to the LC Crank did they change the Taper ? Or do I just have a non Husky Rotor ?

I believe the only difference in the ignition side of the crankshaft was the husqvarna 390/420 were a larger shaft for the big motorway external flywheel. The rest of them were all the same taper. You could have a non husky rotor.

i think the moto plate that i replaced is ok [had good spark] just couldn't get the timing right i think i might have the wrong mounting plate mine is an external rotor mini6 off an 87 250WR we can check some numbers it might be what you need either way its for sale

I believe that there were 3 different size tapers in Huskys and the 3 stubbs can still be bought.

Well after looking at another Engine that I have I have come to the Conclusion that I have the right Crank and the wrong Rotor. A SEM that I had confirmed this. And I went ahead and installed the SEM at 2 mm BTDC. I was planning on using a internal Rotor Motoplat for Vintage MX but I will give the SEM a try. It might work out better in the long run, I have never ridden a 83-4 Ported cylinder and a little extra Flywheel weight might work out for the best.

There is the large taper and then there is the location of the keyway cutout on the small taper in the stuff I have. The 420 auto does not have the keyway cut in the same place as the ones that use the mini 6. I am pretty sure an 87 wr250 would have the system with the two yellow wires at least origionaly. I posted some pictures years ago but all I can find today is the one for the 420.

Sounds like you have it figured out by now anyway.

It is said that the keyway is only for timing and it can be discarded if one can figure out where to position the flywheel. I have never done it. The guys in the chainsaw forums routinely thin down the keyway to modify timing and put it together hard one way. My norton has no keyway but it only spins a cam and centrifugal advance unit.

I found the bolt circle on the 390 ignition I have is larger than the ignition bolt circle on the 82 SEMs I have and the two are phased 180° apart
