• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Dick Jagow GP at Washougal

The Annual Dick Jagow GP was at Washougal last weekend. This was my first 'race' since the broken wrist fiasco last spring. To say that I am out of shape is a gross understatement....but I have a secret weapon...the TXC511. Conditions were perfect, light rain overnight had removed the dust and after the first lap there was great traction almost everywhere. (The afternoon race folks didnt have it so good as a torrential downpour opened up a half hour into their race)

There were 3 Husqvarnas out of eight 50 Am riders; Bono and Tom of Bend on their 250 2 strokes and me on the TXC511. Apparently Husky is going to take over the world one old guy at a time :-) I got a decent start, passed a couple guys on Horsepower Hill and then let them all sneak by and bang bars through the fence and down the slippery downhill. All was well through the damp pasture off cambers ...several, and then the first bottleneck appeared after a mild switchback on an uphill. I pondered the manhem for a second, picked a path and snicked 1st then 2nd and chugged right up the gnarly little hill past a half dozen down bikes. From there we meandered through the dark woods, some more grass track with a bit of elevation change and then one last tight corner with an uphill before entering the MX track. That last hill was the second big bottleneck. Same deal, aim for the little gap between the trees....oops, tilt back against a random Honda for balance, jump off, fire up the bike, and walk to the gap, remount and trench my way to the top .....dispatched another half dozen on that hill.

Spent the next 90 minutes circulating at a modest pace with no drama. I did have to stop and take a water break after 3 loops around the 7 mile course. The bike and I finished no worse for wear and I even beat one guy in spite of my 10 minute rest stop. The right arm is only slightly more sore than the left so I hereby declare the broken wrist healed.

Even though I was exhausted the excellent powerband, throttle response and supple suspension of the TXC made it easy to keep plugging away, rubber arms and all.

I think I saw you out there. I spun a few laps on the 300 and I think I was chasing you through the grass field for a bit.
That grass was freaking slick!

It was an awesome course and the track was perfect. I wish they had used more of it.
I hung out til noon and then went trail riding at Jones Creek with a buddy. Great day!

I wondered who that was on the 2 stroke going around me ...

Yes, Jake got to ride the bi-polar "dry race-to-monsoon" session...

I sure did...

Here is my race report, since there is no video to post because I forgot the memory card!

I did a 115 mile trail ride on the 125 the day before, I figured if I was sore and tired I wouldn't push too hard. That theory worked, kind of... I didn't have time to prep the 125 so I loaded up the TC and figured I would give it a shot at an off road race. My other theory was that it probably wouldn't start first kick on the dead engine start so I wouldn't have much pressure starting dead last and could just ride for fun. Also I showed up with 20 minutes to sign up, get geared up and to the line...

Most of my theories got tossed when it fired first kick and off I went. I probably could have had the hole shot if I just committed and went for it. I was out front with no one in my peripheral vision, that seemed like a good time to look around and see where everyone was. About that time 3 guys blew by, so off we went in 4th place. I lost a couple more spots heading up horsepower hill... TC is slow right, the magazines said so.

I worked my way forward throughout the first lap and was in second for a while when a guy on a 450 caught me. I assumed he was from the row behind me and still made him work for it. He tried passing on one of the climbs and I pinched him off. I didn't hear him for a while but he came back at the end of the lap and we went through the woops side by side and into the next corner he got me before the checkpoint. I didn't want to push to get back by so I paced him for a couple laps until he slowly pulled away.

Then I had another battle with a couple Kawasaki 450's, one was quite a bit faster and I remember seeing him on my line. I passed him early as he was kicking his bike trying to straighten it out after a crash. He showed up again and I held him off for a while until he finally got by and gapped me a bit. Just as the gap got to where he was out of sight most of the time I found him on the side of the track looking defeated. I looked back and he just threw his arms up I never saw him again. Then the other Kawi 450 showed up, by the look of the old school chest protector I assumed he was from the row behind. This was right when the skies opened up and the course went from near perfect to complete crap in a matter of minutes. Kawi guy was a bit faster but kept making mistakes, so we swapped back and forth as he found himself in the trees a few times. I got past him one last time as he pitted, he made the final move the next lap when I pitted. It ended up being a guy I knew, friend bought his fun mover earlier this year and I went to look at it with him.

At the time I pitted there was a half hour left, just enough time for 2 laps. That lap was very difficult, the former foot of silt turned into a foot of Vaseline over hard packed clay. There were two hills that were tough to get up, the second was littered with bikes. I picked my way around a couple bikes and ended up 3/4 of the way up before the river of muck stopped my momentum. For the first time I can remember, I think ever, I had to turn around in a race and take a second run at a hill. A new line had just developed so I used it to snake between a couple trees and crest the top. I made a quick run around the moto track and into the checkpoint where they gave me the news... 1 more lap.

The rain had stopped and the conditions actually improved for the last lap, I got passed by the overall leader in the grass track and didn't even realize it. Usually when they pass it is like I am in reverse, the conditions were so bad that even the winner didn't look fast. Just before the hill that caused me issues the previous lap I saw what I thought was the overall leader. He caught me and passed me just before the hill of doom, but he didn't have my line... I passed him as he was stuck in the rut where I was the lap before. That made me feel at least a little better. He caught me again as we got to the moto track and passed me just before we dropped down to the ski jump only to crash in the next corner. I wicked it up for the last part of the moto track hoping to keep him behind me and not get lapped. It worked until I found out he was in second place...

I ended up third out of 14 in 30+ expert and 23rd overall. Not a bad day, two races for the price of one.

Later,

Found a picture from the race, now it makes sense why the conditions went downhill so quickly...

Later,

Thanks for posting your race stories guys. They make for fun reading! OK, here is my race story, most of which is true. I am still campaigning my race tested and trusty 06 WR/CR 250. I rode the 50 AM class which had an 8 AM start time. Race conditions were near perfect. It had been dry here over the last few weeks. I rode the WORCS race at Washougal a few weeks ago and it was very dry and dusty. But mother nature cooperated and turned on the irrigation system at around 4 AM or so and it stopped prior to race time. Track conditions were as follows: MX course = tacky and perfect, big open grass fields (national parking area) = a bit slick, high speed and very fun, open trails = damp with hard packed slick up-hill sections, tree covered trails = loamy and dusty. There was only 1 small mud hole on the entire course. Epiq day for racing a 1.5 hour GP.

We used the National start area on the east end of the track but we did not use the gates. 50 AM was about 4 or 5 rows back. Dead engine start, straddle the rear tire, old school flag start. Flag goes up!! Step around, jump on the Husky and got a poor kick, (the WR is tall and the kick lever is high on the motor, plus I am not the tallest guy on the line) second kick and the WR screams to life. Surprisingly, I am 3rd at the first corner just behind a couple of e-start, oddly colored orange machines. Close on them up Horsepower Hill and take an immediate right hand turn at the top of the hill and off the MX course onto the first trail. Breathe, relax, be patient and hold the HVA back until I get a room to pass the 2 pumpkins. A minute later we jump onto the open grass fields and the fun begins. Coax the WR forward and quickly dispatch the 2 Katooms in the first 2 or 3 high speed corners. Mostly 3rd, 4th and 5th all the way through the winding grass fields. Fun high speed, off cambered corners that are a bit slick and cool power slides. Uh oh, here comes my cousin Wally and he is on the gas hard like he always is. That's OK, he's cool I will just slot in behind him and we take alternative lines through the grass corners with a little yelling and screaming. Off the grass and onto a trail towards the first up-hill trail. WTF?? There must be at least 25-30 bikes jammed up! Wally goes for it and so do I although I am not sure how we are going to get through mess. I am on the rear fender and the Husky is in full lug mode but I know that it will simply keep pulling. I get to the slick part and I spot a small opening! I go for it and before I get there a bike comes sliding backwards into the gap. Dang it!! Jump off, keep it running, jump back on but it's too slick to grab any traction. Jump back off and start pushing and picking my way through and up the hill. Finally clear of the mess jump on and lug to the top. It crazy because this hill is actually a piece of cake. How do these traffic jams happen anyway?

OK. Breathing a bit hard from the push work up the hill. Now on mostly single track trails under cover of trees. Dry, dusty and some loamy sections but not to bad. Breathe, relax and be smart. Did anyone in my class get through the traffic jam on the hill faster than me?? Am I in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd? Whatever, just need to ride and have fun! Half way through lap 1 (7 mile loops or so) it has really thinned out. I am passing slower riders from classes which started ahead of me and feeling really good. We run some narrow trails on the north side of the property mostly under the cover of trees. Then more open trails on the West side of the property which are damp and in some cases slick. Then up a very steep and very deep loam uphill which is causing problems for some riders. I just make it through a few stuck riders and back onto the very familiar MX course which I first rode as a kid in the early 70s on my DKW 125 leading link. The track is PERFECT and I make good time to the first lap check point which is on the MX course.

Things really settled down after the first lap and I was clearly riding with guys of similar speed after that. In fact, on the last lap I felt a bit lonely out there. Completed a total of 5 laps and lap 2 through 5 were fairly uneventful. Had one minor get off when over-sliding into a slow corner, killed the motor once or twice. Got a little tired on lap 4 and tried to focus on being smooth and conserving energy. Of course the moment I tried to implement this "slightly slower pace" plan I almost fell on 2 or 3 occasions. Said "screw that" and went back to riding my normal race pace and just dealt with being tired. (a bit confusing but I am sure you guys all understand this) Last 3 laps were pretty much wide open with no congestion. Only used 2 tear-offs for the entire day!

Was pretty certain that I finished at least 2nd and was sligtly disappointed when I learned I actually finished 3rd. Who got by me? When? And where? Ah, whatever! It was a beautiful day, the track was awesome, my HVA ran flawlessly as usual and I had a TOTAL BLAST!!

Shout out to Mt Scott MC on a great event!

Ciao - Bono
