  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Desert racing a TXC 449, anyone do it?

Tried unsuccesfully to finish Vegas to Reno this past week. We rode an XR650R 210 miles before it locked up. Started tearing it down and looks like bike pumped/burned all oil out of it. Top end is gone and piston is locked solid. Might have also been a frame fracture letting oil into frame.

I saw a BMW450x racing it. Don't know if he finished or not. Our plan is to race 2-3 BITD desert races next year. I am thinking about racing my TXC449. Can the 449 survive the high speed? Any other motor problems to be concerned about? Fuel should not be to big a problem as most pits are around 60 miles. Filling is a different story. Am I crazy to even consider bike. I can pick up a low hour CRF/KLX 450 for 3-4k and their proven.

That's awesome that you attempted Vegas to Reno, it is a very challenging and dangerous race. My friend Ricky Barbec raced this year and placed third with his teammate
Tyler Renshaw. As far as racing the 449, two Husky teams finished the race, race mods aside, make sure you have a oil cooler and a brand new torque limiter, washer included. :)

Yea saw those huskies they were the older platform. The race was awesome. I ended up racing 110 miles before locking. Worst part was the endless silt between pits 1 and 2. Horrible!! Kept it on 2 wheels somehow.

I own a 2011 TXC449 and race the USDR circuit which is a more GP style race with more emphasis in the desert. The bike needed some suspension tuning right out of the box, really wore me out. Since the suspension mods with ESP suspension I have been really happy with its performance. I like the six gear box out there but I find myself wanting to go faster out in the open. It really winds out at about 60mph. Could use more speed. Other than the speed and suspension, the bike is rock solid smooth.

Damn....60mph thats it? I need more than that. I had XR close to 100 on drylake bed! Wonder if motor will carry taller gearing to hit at least 90. Have jdtuner and FMF exhaust on it.

hey lads I raced a TC 449 in the Finke Desert Race in Australia, she's classified as one of the toughest on the OZ circuit. I ended up getting approx 155km/h top end for the fast bits and probably could have gone down at least one more tooth in reality. Fueling up fast enough is an issue as I couldn't use any of our four fast fuelers as the nozzles dont fit the tank. Had my suspension fettled for the endless whoops.....ERRRR I didn't actually finish due to an engine failure as the big end let go, but thats why I use the Cafe to see if anyone else has had issues etc and no one has. Which is good for all you guys.****************************************!! Whats the go with the clutch Tinken ???? I'm on my second one, what issues did you have..

No problem. I upped my gearing for DS use and can hit 90 no problem.

I have no issues with my 511 personally other than the occasional drip of fuel from here and there, nope, works great.

Speaking in regards to my earlier comment on racing a 2011-13 BMW/Kymco motor from the BMW G450x. The crankshaft mounted clutch spins much faster than normal with the idea behind this that it would have a much greater oil turnover rate, therefore allowing it to run cooler. But the combination of the compact size and high speed has proven troublesome to some racers. Engine malfunctions from the factory team are usually hush hush, but I am told that they put a new one in before every race. *I point to Ty Davis as my generic referral statement, he would have more specific information regarding the clutch works. On a side note I know that on his bikes he has tested out in the desert have oil coolers mounted and I think it is a good idea when ripping across the open desert.

I was able to weasel out a bit of information from one of the mechanics that Husky is working on a new motorcycle with Finnish help. I’m guessing not earlier than ’14 before we get a whiff of it. Not sure if anyone knows about this yet or if I should duck and cover after my statement. Lol.

Damn Honda's, I alos tried unsucessfully to do Vegas to Reno in 2003, same issue on my old XR650R. She popped in Rachel Nevada. Lost the main crank bearing at high rpm's.

Just gear up the 449 and have fun.
