• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Dellorto PHM 40 MS carburetor throttle cable replacement

Flynn

Husqvarna
A Class
Hi guys. I thought I had a sticking throttle but it turned out to be the bark buster cone nut, for lack of a better description. The bit that screws into the handlebar must have been slightly deforming the handlebar and causing the throttle to stick. Weirdly, if I disconnect the throttle cable it doesn't stick, the throttle tube rotates fine.

So naturally from the above information I identified the throttle cable as the cause of the problem and thus set about to replace it. It was already broken in two places anyway so it wasn't too much of a waste of money you could say.

Anyway I searched on Google for info on this specific carburetor and couldn't find much, save for the venerable advrider.com having a couple of threads related to it.

So I took a lot of photos and decided to put them up on here, on a thread.

The exact type of carb (a picture speaks a thousand words as always)

Taking apart

Could do with some cleaning

Factory jet setting

The other side of the barrel

And the most important bit, this is how it all goes back together

Whilst I had the carb off I decided to take a snap of the valves

They sure look nice n' clean! 12k bike so to be expected.

the carburetor very much reminds me of the injection pump on my 1.9 diesel turbo Pegueot 306. It's all rather old school mechanical in there, like in a diesel engine.

Anyone got any tips and tricks for this specific carb, more power, etc?

Delorto are not the best carbs. The brass needle jet (the part the needle attached to the slide slides in) in the carb body wears slowly over time (but fast compared to a jap carb) and makes the mixture too-rich over time. Replacing it makes the bike run like new. Cam.

Lectron if Kevin [at Lectron] and Kelly [at motosportz] can fix Scotts YZ 450 you can fix that

Good advice, thanks. What are the sights of running rich, other than a black spark plug? I would like to get the bike running as best as possible but it seems to be running fine at the moment hence me asking about signs.

Not sure what you mean? I have read about Lectron carbs but what are you referring to about fixing?

I haven't had any troubles with the carb as of yet, it was just the throttle cable that I replaced and whilst I was in there I decided to do a rudimentary clean as well.

Also do you know if going another notch on the clip will give me a bit more power? I have a drilled airbox and the TE exhaust cans on. Also I am at sea level. Thanks.

A wearing needle jet is insidious. It happens slowly over time and your bike runs a teeny bit richer all the time. You don't notice but observe that it just doesn't have the power it used to. The Lectron carbs are a great solution. Not that expensive and easy to tune. It is worth looking at. Delorto, amal, bing carbs all belong in the dumpster. I once replaced a Bing with a mikuni and was shocked at how much better the bike ran. Lectrons give an even better result. Cam.
