  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Deasert Doal-sport; One Piece Suit, Or Jacket + Pants?

OK, what does the opinion pool have to say about 'jacket & pants' vs. a 'one piece suit'? Assuming both have adequate venting to control heat, and cost is comparable.

I considered that, but I'm concerned about the cold mornings. We'll be doing long days, and lots of elevation changes. Temperatures will possibly vary by 50 DF.

I only have had experience using a one piece suit skiing and it was toasty warm. If it has good venting it would be a good choice.

As a Certified Grade-A Gear Whore, I can offer my expert testimony :oldman:

I have a one-piece suit (RevIt Infinity). It is my main commuting suit on my BMW GSA. I can put in on over work (dress) clothes in 30 seconds. It is the warmest option, because there is no draft at the waist. I made the mistake of wearing it on a dual sport ride *once* We hit some mud, it turned into a workout, and I quickly out-sweated the breathability of the suit. I don't wear it in the dirt any more, except maybe an occasional forest road on the GSA. I do love my onesie, but it is really best for commuting and day rides.

My main Touring suit is a Firstgear Kilimanjaro Hi-Viz and a set of Klim Traverse pants. This is what I wear on big-mile, multi-day trips on the GS, or really cold days on the Husky. A two-piece generally will give you more layering/breathing options, and you can take the jacket off so you don't look like an astronaut when you walk into a restaurant :D. I also like this combo because it is waterproof without separate liners or shells, like my mesh rig (see below)

For summer work, singletrack, and heavy dirt days, I wear a pressure suit, jersey, and Klim Mojave pants. This is my high-airflow rig. For dual sport days, I wear a Firstgear Kilimanjaro Air over the pressure suit for cargo capacity. The Kili air has an inner waterproof liner, but you have to plan with these and get it on before it starts raining. I might throw some shell pants on the back of the bike as well. This setup gets the most use on the Husky.

I don't think there is one "do it all" suit made yet, except maybe for the really expensive kit by Klim. Even the high-end BMW stuff has its limits of usefulness. If you're spending lots of time on the dirt side of dual sport, I am going to say a mesh 2-piece suit with waterproof liner/shell is the best overall kit.

Did I forget to mention my leather jacket/pants I use for track days and posing at Starbucks?

I need help...

This works for me.
