    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Hi Mike, The washer is 17mm ID x 23 - 24mm OD X .5 - 1.00mm. Your assumption is correct in that the washer sits on the brass bushing.

It occurred to me that the washer in fact does not ride on the brass bushing. Instead it sits on a step in the spline shaft. This step happens to be located on the clutch shaft right at the end of the brass bushing. I have seen posts from riders who claimed they didn't have any washer and their clutch worked fine but the parts book shows a washer and all the 5 speeds big bores I've taken apart have had a washer.

So, from my measurements the i/d of the washer is the o/d of the shaft. I was going to get a washer machined up, but I can see now that it does need to be hardened otherwise the teeth of the shaft will just eat it up. The parts manual I have shows no washer (so I dont have a part number), yet the husky workshop manual says 'dont forget the washer'!
So, when I reassembled without the washer, and tightened the nut on the inner hub, it was locked on the basket and wouldnt rotate independently - it needs teh washer to keep them apart ..... I assume! Sorry for the lack of tech language.... I am an accountant not an engineer.... Any ideas where I can get one?
 
I think your bike may have a problem besides a missing washer. The thrust washer serves only to protect the surface where the hub and basket meet. The step in the spline shaft is the stopping point for the hub not the washer.

Maybe the step is worn from the lack of a washer or maybe the entire shaft is not protruding far enough out from the case bearing. Maybe theres an over-thick thrust washer on the other side of the case bearing. Although it seems this would put excessive pressure on the primary shaft (clutch shaft) bearings.

There should be a small amount of play in the clutch shaft. Try to move it in and out of the bushing, there should be at least a millimeter play.

By the way you said your parts list didn't show a washer. What year and size motor are we talking about?
 
Thanks - I think the shaft may be worn as you suggest as the step doesn't protrude beyond the brass bush as much as yours
I will go and take another look! It's a 74 mag
