• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Case Inserts..

Are the inserts that the swingarm bolt passes through interchangeable between 1982 and 1987? I see the Part numbers are different for both the inserts and the swingarm bolt.

they will swap but their bore is different as the swinger pivot bolt is larger on single shock bikes. but you could swap them to use single shock cases for a dual shock or vice versa...

The single shock swing arm does fit the dual shock bike. I welded a lower bracket for the lower link and welded a bracket for the upper single shock bolt. I had to cut the lower link to lengthen it with the threaded rod. So the suspension would go the distance. It worked. I did use a newer 250 with the larger diameter swing arm bolt. The holes in the frame had to be drilled out.

Sorry just some conversion.

It worked but it makes me wonder why the big change to the single shock frames? The computer aided design (CAD) system in my mind was spot on it works with no heavier stuff added to the design.

the single shock frame and suspension are lighter, with a rising rate suspension setup. good way to save 10 lbs.

I have swapped the swing arm bushings from a single shock engine case so I could use it in a 83 250cr case. There was no ebay back then. Just Craig's husky sight.
Parts is parts to get these treasures running. I owe you guys pics. My '83 cr250 came out like new. About 20 years ago she fetched $1,200 when I sold it. She'd be worth $6k+++ today. She had the smaller metal gas tank. The tank was new.

That is a pretty broad question. The ones in the 420 auto are tiny compared to say a 1988 big bike. The dual shock uses a 12 mm diameter swingarm pivot bolt while the mono shock one is 14mm. There is a locating pin at the center case so that bore might be too small though I didn't look to answer here. Just talking about the 250 up cases, the later ones had a bit more material around the spot for the insert. I do not like the way the insert is releived for half an inch or so near the outer surface. Even though the part continues on for another 10 years, the later one it has come up unavialable for me. I also think there may be a bit different size at the start of the mono shock just from the stuff I have dealt with. Just make your own would be what I suggest unless you can find an undamaged one in a damaged case.

Do you have a project in mind? I have had the one out one on the drive side of my 83 xc years ago but doubt I had much spares at that time. I have salvaged working engines with bad rear mounts, the mono shock ones a number of times. Some needed welding, I don't try and machine fit them use epoxy, I think 3m panel bond is what I used last time. first time I vacuum installed them if one does that it fills in the recess I don't like.

I believe I used a '87 250cr bottom end five speed case in an '83 250cr bike. I just capped off the water pump and removed the shaft.

I was thinking about buying damaged LC cooled cases for the inserts. I had to cut the swingarm bolt to separate the swingarm from the '82 250 engine that I have, then had to grind down one insert to slide the frozen/rusted mess out the other side of the cases. Through the lot away, forgot to measure it up.

Maybe someone could post up the dimensions. Mainly need to know thickness and diameter of the flange, and overall length?

Unless you buy a dual shock water cooled set of cases the hole in the insert will be 14mm. Pretty much need to match the width of the rear of the engine to what fits around it. if it ends up a bit small use a shim that is what happens to me. The dual shock ones are less problematic, often the case is worn so if you make the washer kind of part of the insert the same as before you end up short. The inner bore of the insert can get enlarged as well from shaking around, not a lot of attachment points on these things.
