  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc Black Wheels?

Jhunter

Husqvarna
AA Class
So I'm at a little bit of a cross roads and need some advise. I have a 2008 WR250 with silver aluminum Excel rims and I'm looking to change them to Black painted rims. I have a few stripped spoke nipples on the rear and the spokes and hubs looking like crap. So here are a few questions:

1) Do I just buy new wheels and hubs? Sounds expensive.
2) Do I send the current rims off to be powder coated black?
3) Maybe just clean up the hubs and buy new spokes and nipples.
4) Buy some used black wheels - complete. If so, what will fit my bike? (KTM,GasGas)

Thoughts?

Take the wheels apart and have the rims and the hubs powder coated and buy a new set of spoke and nipples (black if you choose so). That's what I would do and would be the lease expensive and would last longer than paint.

1) Do I just buy new wheels and hubs? Sounds expensive. Can be yes, but how much does powdercoating rims and maybe hubs, or having anodized, and then add cost for new spokes. If your hubs are billet alum and not cast, id leave 'em clear. I bought an extra rear wheel from Warp9, i think it was like $350, even came with sprocket and rotor, wasnt a top of the line wheel.

I got a quote yesterday for new black DID STX rims (top end), new spokes, new nipples and they'll powder coat my hubs black. With labor and shipping it should run about $625. That was better than I thought.

Seems like a lot of $$.

Can anyone comment on which is more robust powder coat or anodised?
I know either will look pretty shabby once scratched although I suspect powder coating will be easier to retouch with paint when the inevitable scratching occures.
Must say though, black rims look bloody good.

I found a local guy that will powder coat my wheels and hubs for $30 per piece. So for $120 out the door it sure seams like the way to go. New spokes and nipples aren't too expensive. I'll watch a few YouTube videos on how to lace them up and I should be good. Photos posted in a month or so.

Any update on how they turned out? And where did you get your spokes from?
