  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Bikes runs rough when started in gear

So every once in a while my bike has been running rough on startup. Idles low and when I give it gas it feels like it is running out of gas. Today I realized this is happening when I start the bike in gear. I then shut it off, put it in neutral, start it, and it runs fine. Weird. Doesn't jump when I start it in gear either just runs rough. Any thoughts?

That's a weird one. If I had to guess, I'd say that you have a short in the harness somewhere, or the ECM has lost it's mind.

Another thought is that it may not be a gear/neutral thing at all. It may be that when you shut it off it resets the ECM and corrects the problem. I would start by not trying to start in gear. Always shift into neutral before starting. If the problem goes away for a significant number of starts, go back to starting in gear. If the problem comes back you have a better confirmation of your theroy, but not a positive indication. My first rule of trouble-shooting is; 'Don't assume anything'. Start with a theroy, and then try to disprove it. All of the indications that an idea is right doesn't prove it. One thing that disproves the theroy is all it takes to toss it out.

In any case, there are some simple things that you can do. Re-seat (disconnect & reconnect) all of the connectors in the harness. Look for dirt or corrosion while you're in there. I've found that a lot of electrical problems happen at the connectors. Also, look for any pinched areas in the harness. I rerouted my harness (also an 08 510) in two places because the wires looked like they were routed through a tight area.

Maybe Tinken is onto something. I would imagine the engine timing is referenced at start up as the flywheel begins to turn. If the additional load of the clutch is added, then it could easily cause that reference to shift. That shift could change the timing enough to induce rough idle. Once you twist the throttle, the timing will advance accordingly and it will run normally. Just a guess but timing is everything right?
