• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

bike sounds like I am chasing a jar of change

Misfit630sms

Husqvarna
Being new to husky and their bikes, I have a question for sms 630 owners. I bought my bike used with 800 miles on the clock. Out and about on the bike I heard what sounded like someone was shaking a jar of coins in front of me. Looking down I find the head bolt was completely loose and almost off. So I go home and tighten that up thinking I fixed the noise as well. But out and about again I hear that noise, so once again back to the house where i go over every visible nut and bolt and torque down and loctight everything. Thinking I fixed it, back on the road I still hear this noise of loose change. I only notice it at 45 to 50 mph at constant speed. Any thoughts, input, or questions to trouble shoot this is welcomed. Bike has pc5, and pu done, and full Leo exhaust if that helps to get a starting point.

Do not under any circumstances start or run the engine any further. This may prevent expensive repairs and damage. Wait for advise in this thread.

Have you tried contact the previous owner?

Unfortunate for me that I heard this on my way to work today and must get back home. I bought the bike from a local shop as is. I contacted them about this and they said I'm just hearing things and the bike sounds like that.... I won't post up what shop it is because they are members on here but this will be my second bad experience with them. I will try and trailer it home today and let it sit till I get more information on here. Thank you for the heads up!

Are you sure it´s not just the floating front brake disk? Mine sounds a bit like your decription (same as on my CCM).

Only two ways I know to test that. One is apply front break slightly at speed to see if it stops making the sound. The second is to loft the front end towards the heavens at speed and see if it stops when the wheel stops spinning.... I prefer this method Haha. But I will wait to hear more input before doing so.

Does the sound only happen when the bike is moving or also when it is running but not moving? Does it sound metallic or ??? As mentioned try lightly applying both the front and rear brake and see if it goes away.

Ok so after riding home (stop light to stop light traffic, non freeway).... Had to... I notice that in the beginning it was only starting at 45 mph so I applied breaks and still made sound. I pulled in clutch and noise went away. Towards the end of my ride it got to the point that it happened anytime the bike was accelerating as well as at constant speed. It sounds like a high pitch chirping. To call it metal on metal I would be hard pressed to give a definitive yes. I did notice the chain to be a tad loose (not by much though), so I am going to adjust that and see if it helps. This could just be a standard husky sound for all I know given the fact this is my first one. But it just doesn't seem natural. Power is good, breaks work great, my only thought could be cam chain adjustment or valves. I know different bikes do different things to valves, some get tighter over time while others get looser. Anyone know more about that for this bike? Also to adjust the cam chain on this bike is there any tried and true way to do this ie how much tension on the chain should there be?

Rivets on the clutch? Seems to be an issue with these models. Sound like it might be coming from the clutch cover area?

The cam chain has an auto tensioner.

Was there a bolt loose on the engine or triple tree?

Did the seller indicate that they have ever completed a valve adjustment?

Don't think you have to worry about the clutch rivits since that typically occurs after a number of miles, 5000 and up.

Are you using premium octane fuel? make sure since you may have detonation from low octane fuel. drain or siphon it out if you are unsure of what it is.

Is the odd noise occurring during throttle application when cruising from low rpm?

Is the bike under warranty still?

Did they use a dyno with 02 sensor to map it
thats a start....

Loose bolt was on the tree. That's where I originally thought the noise was coming from, I was only half right. It solved some of it but not all. The shop never said anything about valve adjustments and I didn't think to ask due to the bike only having 800 miles on it, stupid on my part. Premium gas has only been used. Noise comes on at steady rpm around 45mph when first taking off. Once bike is at full running temp in traffic the noise starts right from the get go 0-50 mph.... My thinking is heat has a major roll in this. Oil is clean but I am going to do an oil change and check filters and clutch as well to just be sure. No warranty on the bike, I figured I got one on the Ducati and it didn't cover anything even though I got an extended 5 year one so why waste money on another useless warranty. Not sure about the dyno part, I can run it by my friends shop and have him map it again if you think that will help. Once again, thank you all for your help, first 24 hours on this site and the people here are awesome!

It is obviously difficult to diagnose noises when you can not hear them on the spot. If the bike has been titled less than 6 months it would still have warranty. If it were mine and I was in your shoes, I'd think very seriously about returning with it to the dealer so they can check it out for you and determine, from their point of view, if there is an issue.

It seems very difficult to believe a dealer would sell a bike that has a serious issue with it especially if the buyer would notice it immediately.

Did the bike make this noise since purchase?

Who installed the PC5, exhaust and power up kit? Did you friend do the mapping or was it done prior to purchase?

The shop got the bike in a week before I bought it and they had it in there service department for inspection 2 days before I picked it up. It is a 2011 so I am guessing it may be out of that 6 months warranty. The noise started about a week after having the bike, going on 3 weeks now of ownership. I find it hard to believe a dealer would intentionally do that as well, but then again they also told me my other bike (which was bought off of them) was under warranty and it wouldn't cost me a thing to have them look at an issue with the dash. To my surprise when I went to pick it up they worked on it with out telling me what the issue was, no phone call, no hey by the way it's not covered by warranty and it will cost you x amount of dollars oh and one of our techs took the bike home with him over night for a test ride putting miles on my bike off the clock..... to say the least, most dealers would not intentionally sell a bad bike, but this one has now stuck me with a bad feeling. Enough venting hahaha. I have no records in the paper work of who installed the PC5 or who did the power up kit or if it was ever dyno'd. I can however have my friend look at it and dyno it and make adjustments if this will help.

Lots of noises! Loose heat shields on exhaust, exhaust hitting mud flap, rear chain tensioner rattling. etc.....Passenger pegs hitting exhaust etc... lots of things to check. If something is wrong with the engine you should be able to make the sound in neutral not moving.
Heck my engine chewed its self apart in 800 miles and didn't make any noises.

I know your keeping the shop name a secret, but, thats business dude... If they are jerking you around, post up, and you may save someone else the hassle of dealing with them.

+1 post up, and you may save someone else the hassle of dealing with them.

Post a YouTube video with the sound? Also, sure you checked, but it could be a bolt that has fallen out and was replaced but the old bolt is still trapped in the works? My bike had a mysterious rattle and it turned out there was a broken gas tank lid inside the gas tank, someone must have just replaced the top and left the old one rattling around in my tank...
