  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc Best Year for the WR300?

Alright guys, had a 2010 SMR510 a couple years ago, loved the bike, hated to get rid of it. Well a couple weeks ago I picked up another SMR510, a new to me 2009. Couldn't fight the urge anymore.

Now even a few more years back, I had a 2000 WR250 and I LOVED that bike. Awesome for the woods riding here in New England.

So come spring time, I will be looking to add a WR300 to the stable. I used to be smarter on the subject, but I know there were some changes to the WR300 over the years. I know the ignition system changed around 2011?

So knowing what we know now, what year is the best/most reliable?

The older than 2010 ignition is more reliable and if your open to a 250 over a 300 the 250 seems to be more reliable as well. I'm really happy with my 09 wr250, it has the 50mm open chamber Zokes. The 50mm zokes aren't great until you have them re-valved. I had LTR do my forks and shock and with the addition of a Lectron carb and Gnarly pipe it's a perfect woods set up now. SKF fork seals are also an improvement worth the money. No matter which one you get adjusting the clutch arm geometry at the engine will greatly improve the feel of the clutch, it's done by setting the length of the pushrod in the center of the clutch basket and it costs you nothing.

Awesome, all good info. I would not be opposed to a WR250, but pretty set on the WR300. Just like the SMR450 vs the 510, sure the 450 has enough power... but why not just go all out?

I have heard that a Lectron carb with a G2 throttle is a great upgrade.

Besides the ignition, not much changed for the engine/electrical over the years correct? Suspension changes happened along the way?

The Lectron makes it so much easier to ride, I don't see the need for the G2, I would actually prefer a quicker shorter twist/travel throttle with the Lectron if anybody made one. The Ducati ignition that came along around 2011 is not terrible, only a few people had problems with them compared to no problems at all with the older ignition. The KYB forks are good and the Sachs shocks are good as well, some had piston seal failures, (mine did after 2 years) I used it as an excuse to get it re-valved and now it's really good. I've got my bike dialed in for me and so far I haven't found a new bike of any make that I like better mostly due to the fact that Italian WRs are great if you are tall. If I could ever come to terms with a 4 stroke I'd get a new 2010 and up YZ450 but that's another thread.

If you are going to buy a Lectron, I'd recommend getting the pre-configured one from Kelly at http://www.motosportz.com/lectron.html. Plug-n-play. 'Nuff said.

I'll 2nd that  The reason I like the G2 throttle so much I think is because I also have a Rekluse clutch. That combo, Lectron&G2&Rekluse, gives me a very wide seeming, very controllable, smooth power band. Kelly also includes a high quality throttle cable which is the icing on the cake.
Also the combo allows me to run taller gearing, now 14:49, which makes for scary top end while still having a trench digging, u-turn now! 1st gear

Now another question, I would be hoping to find a bike that is street titled in another state, as MA is quite the process.

Did all WR300 come with the computers/gauges on them? Some I have seen with, and some without. What about lighting for turn signals and brakes? Are they all prewired and capped, or does it involve a wire harness swap?

There's a factory kit.
