• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Anyone replace chain master link to rivet-style for 630?

I'm doing a long trip at the end of Aug and was thinking that a rivet master link might be a good idea, as in one less thing to worry about (ie. losing the clip on the current master link). Anyone every do this? If so, what link did you get (I see that BikeMaster and MSR make generic ones)? Any drawbacks with rivet link for off-road?

I would get a good chain, use the clip and have an extra with you. If you need to split the chain for some reason on the trail a clip is much easier and you don't have to bring a breaker with you. Just my $.02

And most of those links you are talking about from bike master or MSR are cast and you can snap with little force! Just get a Renthal or DID O/Z ring and clip it.

the good master links are press fit also (like stock), the BM or other cheap links are slip on. I lost my stock clip and cheap clip replacements two or three times and rode my bike thousands of miles without a clip. Master link never loosened or spread open as the force on the link is not in direction to pull the plate or clip off. The press fit master link gives you reliability almost on par with a rivet link but with convenience of a clip link.

NOT a 610/630 , but on my 09TE450 )sorry if that's a highjack) I have a DID 520 VT2 it comes with the clip master and you can optionally get the matched rivet style. I wouldn't use one that is not specific to the chain make and model.

I had dropped my chain on 2 occasions- the last one screwed up the chain pretty good. It came from moments where I had backed up the bike- I think the clip got pulled off on the chain guide.
I never had that happen- then I had it happened 2 times in a month. Frustrated- I figured Id test the rivet style. You do have to be pretty particular about setting it up= its easier to do it wrong than right. It shows no wear a year later. It is not wider and doesn't rub, like the clip style. I just left it on.... working great for me.

You probably wont' see many using these or prescribing them. The clip style is pretty well the approved standard. I have never seen anyone advise anyone to use one... I'd stick to what you know and carry spares, always carry spares (2) on long trips to nowhere.

I always put a dab of RTV or whatever is in my toolbox at the time on the clip to help keep it in place. Havent lost one yet!
