I just got a new 2013 TXC 310r. Just changed the air filter for the first time and notice there are no mounting holes on the filter housing of the intake. Most Jap bikes have the same filter with the same 3 prongs that go into the foam filter, but unlike the Jap bikes, I didn't see where the 3 prongs mount into the intake housing to help with proper positioning. You just have to "guess" that you lined it up correctly?!? Instead of the 3 prongs sinking into the holes providing an even seal, they just sit on top the metal intake frame. This leaves a slight gap between the prongs on the intake lip. If I try, I can get my finger through the outside even with the bolt tightened firmly. Is it me or does that seem kind of dumb. I would imagine under dusty conditions under WOT, dirt can easily get around the gaps. The whole point of the 3 prongs, is to hold the filter in the correct position and when you tighten down the bolt, and the prongs recess into the holes, allowing the actual filter cage to sit flush against the intake lip. On this bike, only the prongs are flush, not the entire cage itself. Even with the bolt tightened fairly snug, I can move the filter around on the lip. Why wouldn't there be 3 holes like most other bikes?
After spending $6k on this bike, I am a little worried about this design and are thinking of snapping off the 3 prongs so the actual filter cage presses firmly and evenly on the intake lip for a better seal. Any thoughts? Please either tell me I am doing something wrong or give me a good explanation why this design is OK.
To me, without the 3 prongs recessing into the filter housing, they serve no purpose to be there.
