  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Advice on model and year

Hi all,

I'm looking for a bike primarily to do the gas dash here in Western Australia at the end of the year, it's my bucket list item for the year. I' looking at either a 450/449 or 510/511 but would like some advice on which year people think will be best? there isn't a huge difference in prices between a 2008 say $4,000 and a 2011 say $6,000. Should I look at going for newest bike or go with an earlier year, looking at putting a bigger tank and bits on to suit the race but will also be used for local trail riding to get in plenty of practice in the mean time.

Appreciate any help.

Dan

Sounds like a cool event to do!

Not sure what your dealer network is like in WA, but the newer the bike, the better your chances for quick parts supply I guess.

For a race event like that, I'd be starting with a new bike with test Ks on it only. You could do up/rebuild an older bike, but it's a lot of up front money to burn if something fails mid-race.

It'd also be handy if there were other similar bikes in the field too, that way you may be able to sweet-talk some part you don't have out of them.

I don't see too many, actually ANY other TE449s where we ride in SE Qld, I've seen one TC449......

I haven't done a desert race like that, but a new model Husky FE450 might be the best option (most parts same as KTM/Berg)

Tinken is the race-prep guy here on CH, he'd have more for you. http://www.gasdash.com/contents/about-us/what-is-the-dash.htm?id=52
