  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Advice needed on SM511R

Husqvarna
Pro Class
Have got an SM 630 and am thinking of up/down grading to an 511R. Am a bit concerned about servicing and maintenance schedules and also about longevity. I need my bike for everyday use with some (limited) motorway usage.

How often would a complete overhaul be necessary? Would I kill it on the motorway?Would it last a few years ok?

The 630 is a bit too heavy and not agile enough for my needs. I´d like a lighter bike. Regular oil changes and light spannering are ok ... but not much more than that.

Advice from 511 owners would be much appreciated.

Patrick

I do not think longevity will be a big deal. It does not hold a ton of oil so you will need to change it a lot. Sweet bikes. Much lighter and smoother feeling than the 610 (I have owned both) and loves to wheelie.

Depending on how much you tune it, it will probably last about 10k before a rebuild is required.
Motorway is OK if you keep it to around 90kph, however you could always change the gearing to make it easier.

In my opinion some of the build quality is poor, I wouldn't recommend buying as a 365 day commuter bike.
I used mine through the winter, whilst being careful to clean it with scottoil prohibitor, the salt has ruined the spokes/nipples and some nuts/bolts.
I asked Husqvarna about claiming under warranty but was rejected as it was 'just aesthetic'

It's a good bike but you best keep it in a garage and only ride it on dry summer days.

Always keep my bikes in a workshop. 10.000k´s is not a lot! And 90kmh is dangerously low for the German Autobahn. Don´t mind 2.000k oil changes. You´re putting me off the 511! (But thanx for the honest advice)

Sorry to put you off, to be honest (imho) the 511 is a rich mans tool to bling up and take out occasionally.
This is really a mx bike with lights, I likes to be revved up and down and doesn't really like a part/constant throttle opening
It's better used on country lanes, there's no way I would use one on on a regular basis on the motorway.
A 630/610 would be far better for motorway work, having said that saw one in the workshop where the motor had blown keeping up with friends on 4 cylinder bikes on he motorway.
For your usage I would recommend you give a NUDA a test ride. It might be a lot heavier but it has more bhp and great handling.

I have owned a TE511 for over a year and 3000 miles and I find it much different than your description. First off this is no MX bike. It is E-start and 260 plus pounds. Does not need to be reved up and makes smooth power across the board. Is fine with constant throttle all day long. He said...

and IMHO it will be more than fine for that. Like I said i have ridden over 200 miles a day on it with 30-40 miles sections of pavement where i had a blast ripping around at 70 mph and pulling 40-50 mph wheelies. The 610/630 is for sure a better hwy slogger but the 511 geared up slightly will be fine for his use as described.

IMHO

I had an 07 610SM. fun bike. Bit heavy and slow compared to some "real" supermotos I was riding with at the time; ie, KTM 560 SMR, Aprilia 550, etc.
I sold the bike and got a sportbike for some stupid reason.
Came back to my senses and got an 07 510 SM-the bike I should have bought in 2007. What Ive heard is change the oil frequently, check the valves, pay attention to the bottom end more so than the top end. If the bike gets a little difficult to start when cold, exhaust valves may be tight/out of spec.
I have a blast on my bike and if it requires more maintenance, so be it. i'd be doing the maintenance anyway. Im big on preventative maintenance.

Still got my eye firmly pinned on the 511 .... once you´re hooked, it´s hard to be sensible. The more time I spend on the 630, the more I want the 511. I´d not even contemplate the 650 or the Nuda. Hooning around town in urban traffic is what I like doing best and in really tight conditions, even a scooter could often beat the 630.

Based on that you will love the 511. I am no hooligan rider but this bike brings the hooligan out in me. Loves to wheelie and snot around. IMHO Way more fun than the 610/630 but a good bit less practical for long range street use.

Motorsportz - How much different are the TXC and SMR engines?
Doesn't your TE511 have the JD EFI tuner mapping and Akro??
My SMR511 only has race map 2/standard exhaust.

My 510 seems to hit harder than my friend's 2012 511 SM. As a matter of fact, that's straight from my friend's mouth haha. He has a slip on and a basic map on the ecm. If he puts the JD power surge on it he might be where my bike is.:D
He even went up a tooth on the rear sprocket. Im running a 42T rear and I can power wheelie in 3rd.
I do have the Wiseco high compr piston and a JD stage ignition (Map 1/Map 2) with a toggle switch on the bars.

My TE511 has a free flow exhaust and JD tuner. made a huge sufferance in power.

the 510 motor was/is a ripper. The 511 is more mellow and linear. After the JD tuner and muffler it is right there with the brute of a 510.
