• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

86 510 - motor swap into an 84 TX/TE 510 frame?

hawaii-rider

Husqvarna
AA Class
or did Husky do something to the motor/cases that would prevent that from happpening without major fabrication to do the swap.

Thanx

Scott

Bolts right in Scott, if youhave the 4-stoke frame, or you mod a 2-stroke fame......

.Now WHY would you want to carve up a perfectly good 86?

dont want to carve anything
I found two each
1984 TE510 frames

I race EVO, not unlimited so I have to have
no linkage rear, drum brakes, air cooled.

thats all...

some of us have ONE OF EVERYTHING from Sweden...

normal people have to piece things together....

How about the fact the dual shock models have 12 mm swingarm pivot bolts and the mono shock ones at least as far as 1999 have 14 mm bolts which got bigger soon after that but I don't know when. I have no air cooled four stroke experience but putting (just placing) water cooled four strokes in the 83 two stroke frame the carb must be higher up on the engine I had in there than an air cooled one. I am just saying the mono shock backbone type frame gave more room over the carb whether it was needed in 86 can't say.

Isn't the 1986 510 watercooled or just MX model? If so wouldn't you need the aircooled head so exhaust won't hit front downtube?

This is an 1986 model with 2/1 header and Supertrap exhaust! They had most of the bugs out of the air-cooled model by 1986. John a memeber on here put an 1986 motor in twin shock frame,in restoration section

So are you going to Arkansas any time soon?

Difference #1 between 83-5 VS 86 4t. The surface area of the cooling fins much bigger. On Left is a rebuilt 83 head with big SS valves and porting, on right a stock 86 head.

Left 83, center 500 2t, right 86. All 3 will drop into a 83/4 2T frame, just remember the 86 has a 14mm hole through for swingarm bolt and 83/4 is 12mm.

I hope you can notice that the machined face and boltholes for inlet manifold is different between 83/4 and 86.

Mods to fit 86 into 84 4T would be to change inlet manifold angle and length so carb clears frame tube for airbox, and exhaust headers on 86 will have to be swapped for 83/4 headers or custom system.

You probably should at least investigate whether the ballance factor for the crankshaft got changed in the change of frame type and if so when. I know it wasn't in your origional question but it appears to me they changed it on the 500 two strokes at some point around 85-86 or so. And then they changed the crankshaft shape for 87 or so but since the shape is different the ballance difference isn't clear to me. I have on the two stroke side a later 14 mm pivot hole engine with custom rear inserts and the more modern crank in a silver frame (air cooled) and nothing terrible has happened yet.
