  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

81 430 XC won't start

I'm restoring an 81 430 XC. It has a SEM ignition which has no spark. I replaced it with a Motoplat internal ignition and now have good spark. I think the timing is close enough to start it. Tried staring it but I can't even get a pop. Seems to be getting gas. Just wondering if the internal Motoplat is compatible?

repleacing the stator means the timing could be pretty far out. maybe have to actually use a dial indicator and set it before progressing

If you have nothing to check the TOP DEAD CENTER with remove the spark plug use a long pencil very carefully. Raise the piston up where you can just see it touch it with the pencil and run the piston as high as it will go. Now turn the crank till the pencil starts to move down. Mark the flywheel. Now rotate the crank the other through the TDC till the position just starts to move down. Now Mark the flywheel and split the difference between the two marks that's your TDC.

I'll double check tomorrow and let you know the results.

Do not use a pencil.
Have had to take many top ends off because they got broken off, use a metal rod or long thin screwdriver.

I did this method very carefully on the antique single cylinder engines that had no timing marks on the crankshaft and they had magnetos. Being rope start you think a husky can kick back think about your hand and arm on the rope instead of your leg.

Good advice George! I suffered the embarrassment of doing that on my 510 fourstroke.....:-(. Hey that pencil was handy and it was the right size and..and..and!
