• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

    Thanks for your patience and support!

77/78 125CR bing to 34mm Mikuni base line jetting needed

Husqvarna
AA Class
I am planning on replacing my totally worn out Bing 84 on my 78 125CR with a 34mm Mikuni round slide carb. Any one have a good baseline for the jetting configuration? My motor is all original, no modifications. If possible please include;
Main jet
idle jet
air jet if used or not
Needle jet
needle
slide #
float valve size
Also does anyone know of a good rubber boot to use between the carb and airbox? The carb opening/spigot on the air filter side is 58mm OD. Thank you for the help!

If I could find a good original bing I would stay with the bing.

I bought a brand new bing 32 from you a couple years ago, put it on my 74 125, still running great!

I don't know what I was thinking I should have kept it! :banghead: I didn't think I would be riding a 125 anymore but about a month ago I purchased this 78 CR125 for $125.00 (purchased in a lot of four bikes) and the bike is in such good shape I decided to go through all the mechanicals and ride it. I took the motor apart just for the heck of it and installed all new bearings and seals and everything looked brand spanking new, even the magneto looks brand new. I think somewhere along its life someone removed the carb from it and put this wore out carb on it and then the bike sat not ridden for many, many years and now it will be ridden like it was made to do.

I'm thinking the same thing with my 77 hope some one put's up some spec's. Does the Bing put out better power than the Mikuni ??

I like the Bing and Mikuni carbs and I have read other places that the Bing will make more power than a Mikuni but I have never seen any dyno tests doing a direct comparrison. I think it comes down to how well the Bing or Mikuni is tuned and adjusted for the apllication. They are both very easy to adjust and tune.

I have a 34mm Mikuni on my '82 125XC, probably not perfect since its got the new big reed cylinder, but it might get you in the ballpark. I'll get the jetting for you tomorrow.

I've read many times that the Bing makes more power but no one ever has any number to back it up. I do not believe it, what I believe is the Bing causes a more abrupt power delivery which people misinterpret as faster when it is not.

If you have the jetting/configuration handy that would be great but don't take you carb apart to do it. I did some digging around and found a good 32mm VM Mikuni and mounted it up and installed jets that I think would work best and here is the jetting configuration;
Main #250
idle/slow #35 idle mixture screw out 3/4 turn
air jet #2.0
Needle jet #159P8
Needle #6F22 clip is in the middle position
Slide #2.5
Mag timing is 17 deg. BTDC set with a timing light.

My elevation is 2800 ft and today it was in the low 40'sF and the bike ran absolutely excellent. Instant throttle response from a dead idle and excellent acceleration all through the RPM range. Also idles clean and will idle forever without dieing. If I was to change anything at the moment would be to change to a#40 idle jet but I thought I would wait to see how it is when the weather gets warmer. One thing I had to do was clearance the float bowl so it would not touch the motor center case back on the raised area of the case next to the kick starter. I probably was not really needed but just didn't want the carb to rub on the case. So for those looking to do a Mikuni swap on your 77-79 this may help you out. I am very happy with the swap it was a huge improvement from the wore out Bing. I may try a 34mm Mikuni later on.
