• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

74 or 75 motor?

Husqvarna
AA Class
Recently bought a 74 250 Mag. My first vintage, learning curve for me and working some bugs out of the bike. Took the transmission side case off to replace the kick starter and shift lever seals. It appears I may have a later motor, I'm but not sure. Looking closer I see: the shifter is down low like a 74, but on the case, above the shifter, is a seal where it looks like the shifter would go on a 75. Look at the pic of the inside of the case, there's a shaft output that looks like its been JB welded at the case. Also, the horizontal ribs on the outside of the case...I'm not sure if the 74 had those. There is no doubt the frame is 74. Any input on the motor?

75 and later are 6-speeds, also use a different type of detent for the shift drum, my mag has a 75 6-speed trans.

That motor has the radial head which was used on 75 250 GP. Take a look at the motor number then go to www.husyclub.com and look it up. 74 Mag had a different head, I remember back in the day people would put the 74 head on a 75 motor to make it vintage.

To dumb dot dog: My bike is certainly a five speed, and I'm not sure what the detent is. I don't believe I'm far enough into case to see the shift drum.To Photo guy: I forgot to mention, there is no engine tag, it's missing. The guy who put the bike together purposely put on the later radial head.

So, the more I look and learn, the more I'm confused. My side case certainly appears to be 75 or later. It has the place for the gear links, but there are no gear links. Did the 74 have gear links? From looking at schematics, it looks like gear link was utilized in 75 to raise the shifter up higher?. Is it possible the side case was just replaced with a later year case? Also, from what I've researched, on the 74 the oil drain is under the motor. Mine is on the right side of the case. I'm not too concerned having a later motor in there, I just got to know what the heck I have.

Looks to be a 74 Mag motor with the 75/76 clutch cover installed. Probably due to the original 74 mag clutch cover was damaged. They are hard to find in good shape. Hope this helps,
Marty

I got it figured out. As Marty said, its simply has a later year side case on it and the shaft that is JB welded has something to do with shifter forks in the motor. On the magnesium motor there was never a bushing and it gets wallowed out. The permanent fix is to have a bushing machined around the shaft. Thanks to all for the input, and thanks to George at Up Tight Husqvarna in Santa Ana, Ca. Very knowledgeable and personable!

That is the old clutch, the '75 got the "new" clutch, so I agree with motomwo it looks like a '74 engine with a later clutch cover.
