  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

511 Clutch Plate Tab - BROKEN! :(

Suputin

Husqvarna
AA Class
I changed the oil to discover a big chunk of metal and a bunch of smaller shards on the oil screens. The piece was smooth on both sides and about the thickness of a clutch plate so I surmised it was a broken clutch plate tab.

Today I opened up the clutch cover and there it was, a missing tab on the very inside plate in the stack.

I am gonna order a replacement plate obviously but just wondering what the consensus might be on the safety of riding the bike till the new part arrives? I will pull the plate and give it a close inspection to ensure it is not further cracked or about to disintegrate. I suspect it is just the tab that snapped off as the break looks to be pretty clean.

The bike only has about 4000 kms on it and I never noticed any clutch issues or otherwise until I went to change the oil.

What say you?

It would depend on what it did after it left the clutch housing.
There's a lot of important gear between there & the screen.... :(

The engine and transmission worked fine. I never noticed anything prior to finding the metal on the screens. There are only two possible options. Ride the bike and hope everything is OK. Or tear the entire motor down to find out if everything is OK. I don't have the money nor inclination to do the second. So its either gonna be OK or it won't.

My only concern is running the bike with the chipped clutch plate until I can get a replacement. As long as that plate doesn't have any other obvious damage I suspect it will be OK until I can get a replacement plate. It the plate is either cracked or otherwise obviously damaged then I won't ride the bike.

Understood, and I see your point, but the potential is there to go from 'savable engine with maybe a couple of marked gear & bearings' to ' not much left in here we can use'.

The missing piece should have little effect IF the plate isn't warped or as you said cracked.
It'll be slightly out of balance.
Waiting on parts could be the killer if not in stock.
If it were mine, I'd strip it for a look, it would eat me up not knowing..... :(

I am not a mechanic and If I go that route the bike will be down the rest of the season which will be a real bummer.

I checked the parts fiche and it looks like the clutch pack is sold as a unit with all the plates. I am hoping I can find just a single plate somewhere.

Yeah, though one mate.
I guess time will tell.
Maybe buy some cheap engine oil & change it a few times after warming it up to flush out any debris.
Put your good oil back in & hope....

Maybe a larger dealer might have a clutch in pieces somewhere.
Hope it goes well!

You should be fine. Probably OK to ride it but I would not. Pull apart and inspec all the rest of the plates. Call ZipTy and is if they have one good used plate they can sell you (so you don't have to buy the whole pack). My guess is they have piles.

I wouldn't ride it because whatever flaw caused it to fail might still be present in the plate. Luck is a finite thing my friend.

I pulled the clutch pack apart and had a close look at the plate. Everything seems good, there are no other cracks or any kind of distortion or other obvious damage to the plate. The area where the tab broke off shows a clean, smooth break with no ragged portions or anything suggesting the break may get bigger. The basket also seems to be fine with no obvious damage or impending cracks.

I moved that plate to the top of the stack (for easier replacement when I get a new one) and reassembled everything. Took the bike out for a 15 km test ride and everything seems normal. No weird noises or strange behaviour.

The clutch plates in-situ. The broken one is right side, very bottom. Its a bit out of focus but the tab is clearly missing.

Close up of the broken plate. Nice clean break with no evidence of further damage. Must have been a factory defect ... too bad my warranty is long gone.

Easy fix....you had me second guess and at my oil change today I checked the screens...I had 2 huge brown pieces of metal on one...I got terrified then pinched them with my fingernails and they came apart like dirt or maybe chocolate....either way not a problem...(phew!)

Glad you dont have to split any cases :)

Uhhhhh anyone got a spare OEM metal clutch plate for a 511 lying around? Just heard from the dealer and the clutch plate pack can only be purchased as a unit and it will cost the better part of $300 by the time I get hold of it. :(

S W E E T !!! Thanks cause I was not too happy about having to buy the entire pack.

I will pull the plates and have a closer look at them. You wouldn't have a pic or diagram showing how they are supposed to go together?
