  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

510TE Question

Puckerbush

Husqvarna
AA Class
The routine maintenance for my Harley is oil changes, wheel bearing grease, and air filter cleaning. And this is for intervals of 5,000 miles.
The shop manual for my 510TE says that at 10,000 kilometers or 6,215 miles, I should replace the piston assembly, connecting rod assembly, crankcase bearings, valves, intake manifold, clutch discs, drive sproket, rear drive sproket and timing chain. Did I forget to mention oil and filter?
Are they kidding? You may as well buy a new bike every 5,000 miles. Maybe they are just trying to promote extended warranties. At that distance, thank God the handlebars are still servicable. I'd hate to have to replace them.

All of the race derived Enduro/DS bikes (KTM, Yam' Honda, etc) have similar maintenance schedules. For what it's worth, I've heard of Husqvarna engine life ranging from 4,000-15,000 miles depending on what the bike is used for.

I have 6,200 miles of primarily off-road miles on my bike, and I don't see any signs of wear. I've adjusted one valve one time to date. I've never seen anything that looks alarming in the oil screens. The motor sounds almost exactly like it did new. So, I'm not planning on a rebuild any time soon, but that may change. We'll see. BTW, you're looking at about $2K for a rebuild.

11,000+ miles on my '10 TE450, has never run better, just put in new clutch fiber plates, EBC brand for $60. No major engine expenses or rebuilds, and I'll be shooting for at least 15,000 miles, just riding dual sport and off road in NM and CO.

Remember when the KTM EXC's first came out, the motors were gonna grenade when they are driven on pavement, the engine does not have enough oil capacity... etc etc It was all a bunch of crap. we are buying Hi Performance machines that haul ass and soak up all the hits that come at us. If the only goal is hi mileage and no problems, get a Honda XL. The current offerings are a "all new" CRF250L or the good ol XL650L-346 pounds and still air cooled!

Thanks for the reasurance. I'm feeling better about this bike now. I realize the maintenance schedule is there for Husky dealers to make money on people who think their machine is about to explode if the service is not performed accordingly. But I've been riding Huskys for over 35 years and still do because of their reputation and quality. I rebuild vintage engines/transmissions as a hobby and love to work on them. I guess I'm just addicted to Huskys.

There are a lot of riders, many on this forum that have 5,000, 10,000+ miles with not more than a valve adjustment. Change the oil often and these motors should last a long time.
Puckerbush, where do you ride mostly? I see you are in Anaheim Hills. I am guessing where the puckerbushes grow! Stoddard Wells, Mojave?

Yup my 06 450 is now a 530, but anyway I changed the oil and filter every 500 miles. Constantly check the valves but only needed adjusting once or twice. I completely rebuilt it at 12,500 with every oring bearing ect. Motor was beautiful inside. Lower rod bearing was perfect. Could have gotten prolly another 8k out if it. And this is on a smr that I beat the shit out if daily. I also changed all fluids once a year, greased the bearings constantly. But hell I was borded and I live rebuilding shit. And your not the only husqvarna guy with a problem. Haha hell they made us addicts a entire forum haha

Hey Benwiggin2. I forgot your name but the ride back to the outlet store almost found us entirely in the dark. Luckily my son was on the 510TE that had a headlight. It was nice to see the lights of the stores knowing we were close to camp. We are riding near Lk. Silverwood this Saturday. Meeting at McDonalds at 8:30 if you are interested. Gotta get one of those 3 gallon tanks and work on my suspension to lighten up the front end a bit. Take care.
Pinnitowinit: Wow what a nice place to ride. The island of Maui and the Road to Hana not to mention Haliakala Crater.

Ha glad you made it back ok, shadows were getting tall that afternoon. I would love to meet with you guys this weekend but I'll be riding out by Bullhead City AZ somewhere. For sure on the next one, huh? My neighbor was out in the area you are going to last weekend in the rain, had a pretty good time!
Talk to you soon, Brock

Hey Benwiggin2, except for the rotor protector on the rear that could be my bike.

Haha yep! Love it. Did you post a ride report a while back with you and a buddy riding across some desert somewhere for a couple days??????

Yeah, that was the Death Valley ride. We barely scratched the surface of that place. We're going back next year. It's a 500 mile drive to get there for us, and I'd do it tomorrow if I could. If you're in Brea, you really should do a DV ride. It's just an amazing place. It's like riding on another planet.

That was an awesome ride report. I will definitely do that some day (soon) and report back.

ps I like your bike!!
