  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

449 Sproket issue and corrosion

AA Class
Just found a couple issues I wanted to pass on.
I ride mostly in the Sierra mountains so I needed to gear down so I could stay off the clutch while crawling around the hills. I went to a 13 tooth up front and left the 51 in the rear (TE449). While this worked superbly, I stumbled on an issue while on the jack stand. I was running the engine to distribute Slime in my new rear with Tubliss inserts. The chain was jumping badly like it had a bad link. I checked and the chain is fine. I took the kick guards off so I could see better up front and the chain is too tight a radius on a 13 tooth. I had no indications when riding the bike, only when it was jacked up. I think 14 would be fine but I'm putting the stock 15 back on and switching out the rear to a 53 like the TC comes with.

Next issue.
After changing the sprocket I was adjusting the chain tension and the left adjusting screw seized in the swing arm. I've managed to get it worked free a bit but its not out yet, letting penetrating oils do their magic. I took the right one all the way out to see how long they were and I discovered a mess of rust on the threads that were inside the swingarm. That's most likely what's jamming the other side up. Suggest pulling the adjusters at next tire change or sooner and cleaning up the screws and applying some anti-seize or ACF 50 to prevent the issue. These aren't water tight and the dissimilar metal corrosion is a bad thing.

A 13 tooth sprocket should cause no problem for the chain, I run a 12t on my TE250 and have no problems, suggest you check for something else unless it's a unique 449 issue?

The adjusters issue seems to be common, I took mine out and due to corrosion on the threads and most of the threads in the swingarm came out with them! I had to helicoil the swingarm threads. If you do manage to get them out without trashing the threads then use some copper grease to prevent further problems.

Most bikes like ours run alot of chain slack, only rarely is the chain as tight on our bikes as it is on the 449/511 bikes, their chains are supposed to be the same tightness all the time.

I've had the adjustment bolts sieze on other bikes. Allways a good idea to pull them all the way out and grease them first thing. I can't remember if I have done that yet with the TE lol

I'm thinking what I had with the sprocket issue is the chain links are so dang tight when cold. The orings really do a good job. I'd bet that when its heated up the issue is gone.
Input?

I would never run anything smaller than a 13T counter sprocket..... Why, because my daddy told me 20 years ago not to. Puts chain in too much of a bind.

13/51s were fun for rock crawling, but too low for me to do serious off roading. 14/51 was better.

Right now it's 15-47 , I'm going back to the 13 or will try my 14-51. Chain slaps around a bit even with my tall gears.
I've been considering getting a 47 for the rear. How big of an affect does it have on low end for tight s/t ? That would be my main concern. I would like to be able
hit the slab for a few miles without blowing it up but I don't want to give up the low end for the woods. What to do............

Bike has a ton of bottom end but you will need to get use to riding with one finger on the clutch or catch some flame out like any other high performance 4t... Is a bit more of a handful and you defiantly will make your clutch where out faster with the 47. Depending on the ST I ride the 15-47 is not a option and will go back to a 13 or 14-51. Bike has more on bottom than my 450r with slightly more flywheel than my R and I have the biggest flywheel from trail teck on it.

That trail is no problem with 13/51s, I climbed up the mining trails with that ratio. Any lower of gears and I would have dificulty stabilizing the bike upright.

Yeah , 13-51 gives good control on those switch back / stand up / clutch / lung / balance / stop / repeat / no feet on the ground teeter totter turns / sections , any lower isn't necessary , no wonder you can't get a 12 for our bikes , a 53 and that is as low as it gets for us.
