  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

449 Knocking Sound / Strange Noises

Huskyinoz

Husqvarna
Hi My Husky 449 is making a strange knocking sound from what seems like the RH Rocker area.
It goes away with RPM so isn't rod knock,

And when started with the choke and left on high idle,
The noise has disappeared completely.

Only to return the next time it was started.

I am thinking it may be rocker or valve clearance related,
And not sure how to locate the half balls and shims to adjust it in Australia,
Or any idea of prices.

But also think it could possibly be timing chain tensioner,
Especially if it's Hydraulic.

Has anyone else had a bad knocking sort of noise that they found and fixed,
On one of these 449 / 511 motors?

Have heard of the Torque Limiter bearing failing also?

And some cam and half ball / rocker issues.

Apart from that it runs and rides fine,
The sound is very notice-able at idle.

Any help appreciated.
Cheers

Clutch in and in neutral? I pull my clutch in and the knocking I hear goes away

Where are you based in Australia? I'm in Melbourne and have done complete engine rebuilds on the 499/511's and I'm happy to help you diagnose the issue.

I am in Brisbane.
The noise nearly sounds like rod knock but goes away with revs.
It was not there at all one of the times I started it after warming it up with the choke / fast idle pulled out.
Did the stator bolts and it wasn't them either.

Wondering if it could be the timing chain guide in the rocker cover,
Or something in that area....

Cheers

Just saw a vid where someone else has a similar problem and it was their TPS voltage at idle.
Which sort of makes sense as the noise goes away when hot,
Needs choke out to start,
And idle speed adjusted with by turning the choke like a dial.

Could also be the crazy high valve intake clearance used on the TC 449's which is nearly the same as the exhaust,
But really hoping for it just to be the TPS voltage now ****************************************
