  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

310 Commuter?

Clete

Husqvarna
AA Class
Is the 310 capable of being a part time commuter? Doesn't necessarily have to be freeway commute. A new Husky is on the brain, but dumping the SV650 & the '02 CR/WR250 may be the only way to get the ol' lady's blessing. I don't want a big heavy bike for the trail riding we do. Any suggestions?

I commute on my TE510 daily throughout the summer. I ride roughly 6 miles to work @60-65 mph. It has good power to pass when needed and is really fun on the trails. I don't know if I would be as happy with a 310 on the road(although I would probably like it more in the trails). The 510 is not very comfortable or great ride on the road but it really fits my lifestyle when I want to hit the beach or ride some trails whenever I choose. I had it on I-5 once and I personally did not like the drift of the knobby @ 70+ mph or the passing semis...call me squeamish. My biggest complaint is no passenger pegs which I can't decide if I really want to put a set on or not. It would be nice to be able to take the kids to soccer practice at times.

True dirtbikes like the 310 have short lifespans compared to street bikes. Why burn out an awesome bike much quicker by clocking up miles on pavement commuting?

I would not use it to commute unless your ride to work is within 5 miles and you don't have to get on roads where the speed limit is above 50. This bike (well the 2010 anyway) gets real buzzy when you get up past 50mph, I mean it is an Enduro bike.

Could you? Sure
I wouldn't. Smallest bike I commute on is my SM610. My 310 and 525 only see trails and some Dual Sport Events.

Buy the Husky and then get a KLR for a commuter bike. You can get a good used KLR for couple g's. Save the 310 for what it was made for, the woods!

Agree. Unless the pavement is short and not every day. I've done 20-30 pavement miles on my 11 250 when it was new breaking it in with the street gearing. I wouldnt make a habit out of it.

Don't make the costly mistake I did. The biggest problem is the way to close ratio transmission ,too tall first ,too low sixth gear. I tried to make it work but finally threw in the towel and took my lickin'. As a trail connector it works, just not a highway machine.

I think part of the issue here is what is your definition of commute ... I just rode my TE250 to work... 4 miles; half on a 55 mph 'freeway' and the rest on wide suburban streets. Using the highway sprockets it works just fine this way ... running faster than 60 for any period of time is painful as is too much stop and go. I wouldnt make it my regular commuter but it is fine for the occasion short highway ride.
