Bought a really nice 310 that started just fine with kickstart, but like other BMW Huskys it had the electric start spinning death sound. Easy fix I thought, I've replaced starter gears and sprag clutches on other dirtbikes. Well.....not so much, and now I'm stumped at my wits end. I've replaced everything I can but still get the starter spin of death with no engagement.
1. New batteries (tried two)
2. New starter relay.
3. New starter and starter switch/button (handlebar).
4. Checked starter pinion gear where it engages the bevel gear at the end of the worm starter gear/shaft (right where starter mounts to the case). They are both spinning quickly and freely.
5. Replaced sprag assembly and starter gear (Hall's had one starter gear left). Inspected worm starter gear/shaft and it looked great so I didn't replace it, plus Halls no longer carries them.
I also replaced the end bearing that resides on end of crank/flywheel.
What am I missing here? It seems it should be engaging and starting. The bike does have a Rekluse EXP clutch, could that be causing it to not catch and drive starter gear? Or is there a decomp (I've read about theories on valve clearances and decomp not being adjusted correctly) that is releasing compression contributing to not allowing the sprag to catch?
I love this bike and would die to have electric start on it working, especially since I've spent much time on money trying to fix it already.
