  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I have a 2012 TE250 with 50hrs and 1440 miles that imploded this last Sunday. From what the dealer has said the Camshaft bearing went and from there took out the head, piston and valves.

The bike had the valves checked at 600 miles and does have a 45 tooth rear sprocket, but I am a very new dirt rider and the bike is not ridden hard. The bike has never seen above 50MPH. Luckily the bike is under warranty until May, but what I would like to know is if anyone else has encountered this issue? I'm really concerned that this same issue is going to happen again only next time it's out of warranty and I get hit with the bill. I really do like the bike, but if it is going to be a service nightmare it will get replace by a KLX250. Should I be concerned or do you think this was a fluke?

Nice to hear you were within warranty, my 2010 has similar hours and miles, how often were you changing the oil and filter and what oil were you using?

Motul 300V 5W40. The bike does have the power up kit and the oil/filter was changed at 600miles. I do have to do about 11miles of pavement to get to the dirt riding, but the bike never exceeds 50MPH. How often should the oil be changed? Do you follow the miles or hours specification? Do the 2010's have the Xlite motor in them?

Was the "first" oil / filter change at 600 miles?

I have had numerous x-lites (TC250s and TE310s) some have / had well over 100 Racing hours trouble free.

I change Oil & Filter at least every 5 hrs , first change after 1 or 2 hours. (Motorex 10w60 Cross Power).

X-lites only hold 0.9 litres so my advice is change often ! Even if the Oil is still good you can see any unwanted debris, and avoid a disaster.

I dont have a crystal ball like OHR to say what / if oil, caused the problem but I would say you were unlucky, but up the oil change regime !

I am 99.99% sure that this was not an oil related failure....

I got alot of metal filings off my magnetic sump plug after 150kms break in ride on my xlite 310... hhmm.. although, I doubt filings would cause catastrophic bearing failure.

OlderHuskyRider, whats your opinion on camshaft bearing failure such as this case?

I change the oil every 4 hours with the same oil as you, I only race so if you're not racing then every 8 hours should be fine. If you've only done 1 oil change in 50 hours this could be what caused the faliure. Yes 2010's have the x-lite motor.

2 oil changes in 1500 miles? It probably didnt have any oil in it. My 2010 TE250 would burn 100ml of oil in 5 hrs. 900mls total capacity doesnt give you much wiggle room once it gets low either.

Check out the thread on the top of the 4 st forum. The only beairng in an x-light head is the camchain bearing.

Others have had problems with this Indonesian bearing....so far not me on my 2010, but I have not quite 800 miles on it.

I checked the oil level prior to Sunday and the oil level was correct. The original oil/filter change was at 600miles. I do not race the bike so I was following the street schedule for maintenance. Every 8 hours would mean that I would change the oil/filter every 2 rides. Doesn't that seem excessive for synthetic oil?
You just change the oil every 8 hours or the oil and filter?
I just don't want the issue to ever occur again so I will follow whatever you guys think.
So since the bike is powered up should I be following the race schedule in the service manual even though I am not racing the bike? How often should the piston and valves need to be changed?

Yep, the thread about the camchain bearing sounds exactly like the issue I encountered. Still curious on the recommended oil schedule and who has the most mileage on one of these Xlite motors? I usually ride at least 50 miles when I take the Husky out and will end up putting alot of miles on this bike. Is that a reasonable expectation for this bike or should I expect alot of servicing to be able to do 50 miles a ride? My past experience is with street bikes so looking for some guidance on a real life maintenance schedule for a powered up bike that is used "leisurely". The dealer told me to follow the street schedule in the Service Manual. Is that a incorrect statement?

As stated above, these x-lites hold such a small amount of oil therefore it needs replacing often. On an average enduro I may travel upto 120 miles in four hours, hence I'm changing the oil every 120 miles. Folks who are used to off road bikes barely raise an eyebrow to this but if you're a road biker (is see you have a couple of beemers) you'll be used to changing the oil every 5000 miles or so, this may sound excessive but these bikes need it.

I agree, filings and chips stay in the sump when they get there, they dont recirculate.

I believe these bearing failures are bad bearings or improper assembly where the bearings are damaged somehow: bad torque, bad pressing on, etc.

Said it many times but my 2010 tc250 blew up at about the same hours but I changed oil every 2-3 hours. Connecting rod bearing went. Phoned Ty Davis to see if I could improve motor and there is but expense and he said it is a common problem (Motor run hot) if bike is rode hard like mx use or fast off-road riding. Mine was used for Mx 80% of the time. Cost me $2000.00

......so I will follow whatever you guys think....
This is a peer-to-peer internet discussion site, ideally you would use input given to you with 'a grain of salt'.

If it were me I would also contact various other places/dealers to see what they think, and of course treat that input with a grain of salt.

In general Husqvarna bikes are reasonably reliable, but can have certain weak points, as noted by some people in this thread.

Change the oil more often. This is a diagnostic task as much as proper upkeep. Also, take the valve cover off frequently and keep an eye on that bearing.

i came from a klx250. completely different bike, and you can probably go 3000 miles without changing the oil. but i wouldn't compare the bikes at all. they are completely different. both have their good and their bad...
