  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2012 310TE advice

Nordic

Husqvarna
A Class
Former MX racer getting back to riding after (gasp) nearly 30 years of kids and career (from back in the days when Huskys were jet black and made in Sweden). Still fit and very interested in having a quality bike that can be ridden reasonably hard off-road (maybe even the occassional midwestern enduro) and still used for short commutes. My master plan is to get the kids out there for some weekend riding as well.

I have a chance to buy one of the leftover 2012 310TEs for a very reasonable price, but have read some reviews that made it sound like these where hellish on the roads, and also very loud and prone to vibration. Can anyone comment based on their experiences? My other option is to spend the extra ash for a 449/511. Like most, I am not looking to earn a living riding this machine, but do want something that can put a big smile on my face. I would also appreciate feedback on the best after market upgrades for the small gas tank and any other limiters.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Scott

Sorry that I don't have much input. Neither are very road worthy from what I hear because of the close ratio transmission. If fuel range is your concern then the 310 may be best because you can get larger tanks. The 449 511 has safari tanks that sit on the back but I think they only fit the 2011's. there is a company that makes thermos looking fuel cans that you could carry.

Just my opinion after riding the TE250 and WR300 this past weekend over some roads on the way to some trails. If the majority of my time was spent on paved roads and open dirt roads, I would opt for the larger displacement (449,511). My TE250 was turning between 7500-8500rpms just keeping up with the group on the paved roads and I can't say vibration was much of an issue for me. In the trail, I don't have any feedback on the 449/511 but the 250 and TXC310 are a blast as well as on the MX track which is my back ground (15 years ago). Great fun with the kids as well although I'm not sure that would be an issue with any displacement.

Best of luck with your decision..

Mike

Had a TXC449 and have a '12 TE310 and neither is great for long stretches of road but the 449 is better for sure but when it comes to the woods the 310 is so much more fun and light and flickable. Bottom line imo anyway neither of them are very road worthy they are meant and built for offroad work and the TE310 really shines there!

I'm in exactly the same boat, except i rode enduros not mx, and it was 36 years ago. I bought a TE 310, but have only ridden it about 4 miles so far. I'm looking forward to doing some serious trail riding and perhaps and enduro or two.
For what little I know about it (which is nothing really), I'd buy the 310, cheaper and maybe a better trail bike, but as I said, what do I know?

Thanks to all who. Shared their input. I went over to St. Louis and purchased the TE310 this afternoon. Great shop and I am looking forward to some new adventures. Hope to have something of use to contribute down the line to the forum.

Best,
Scott

I agree with this input.

Though it has been a while since I've ridden the bikes. When I first rode a 449/511 the first thought I had was "it was much better on the road than the previous 450", though it was certainly not a street bike.

It is completely personal choice. Neither model is better than the other, they are both the same physical size and similar weight. I have ridden most of the husky lineup and the my13 310R. I'm a big guy and the 310R does not have sufficient power for tastes. My 511 will go 120mph down the tarmac, cruise 70-80mph and is still completely nimble in the woods for me. The 310 gets better gas mileage and can handle most any trail from the average rider.
