  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2011 TE 250 or 310 ?

Got the 250 today. Thanks everyone here. The deal was just too good to pass up. The dealer had pretty much "un-corked the bike except for the charcoal canister which seems pretty easy do it myself. It felt a little sluggish on the test ride but when it warmed up it got better. I am told that these motors need to break in before they can hit peak HP. Any thoughts on that and how the break in should be treated?

I had the dealer put on the 50 rear sprocket.. wow.. what a difference. I have only done 10 miles on the tarmac but it is winding in 4th at 30 mph. If I was going to ride much on the road the 40 would go right back on ! I know all this is going to take some getting used to as my primary ride is a 800GS. The only issue I am going to have to remedy is the height. I am on my toe nails and even though I will learn how to one foot it I need at least an inch off. So the choice becomes .. shave the stock seat an inch or so, Get the OEM low seat ( loses 35mm or an inch and change) or see about lowering the suspension. On that note I was told by the dealer that the suspension will sag more in time so ride it for awhile before messing with it. Also.. is this a bike that should be "set up" suspension wise? I am 170 pounds geared up?

More to follow. Needless to say I am pumped !! View attachment 11014

Congrats on your new Husky
You will have a blast with it....

Sweet looking bike. May want to go up one tooth on the front if you are going to do a lot of road riding. I had mine lowered 1.5 inches, revalved for tight single track and heavy spring in back--and love it. My inseam is 30 inches and I weigh 245lbs.

For suspension work, call John Curea at East Coast Suspension (724) 336-3293. He 's done all my bikes that last 5 years. Tell him how and what terrain you ride and he'll set it up accordingly. My thought is that most of your stuff is road and you are 170lb, most likely ypu will just need to send out the forks and shock to him and will do do what he does to lower it. He's great to work with. Tell him Bob from Butler sent you.

Both are very good bikes ... Did you watch MXdN this year? Guys on 250s were showing the 450s the way around the track ... So I'd say, hone your riding skills because you have a very good piece of iron to ride on ...

You can maybe fudge the rear sag a ~little bit to help on the seat height also along with raising the forks in the triple clamps ... I also move up to the lowest point in the seat when I know I might need a dab to keep going ...

And moving up 1T on the FS will open up that 6speed CR tranny ....

The 511 kit is about a 2 on that scale so I dont image the 250 is very tricky. Instructions in package are pretty thorough. I ordered mine through Kelly at Motosportz (motosportz here if you want to contact him), he seems to work pretty closely with JD...they are both in Washington state.
I installed the JD Jetting kit, but am not seeing an increase in performance off the line; what settings do you recommend? I'm willing to sacrifice mid and high end power for more punch off the start.

Finally, after weeks of researching with Husky, Thumper Talk, this site, Team Husky, trying the JD Jetting Power Surge etc., the dealer fixed my problem for one hour of labor. The explanation was complicated and made sense (had to do with Husky setting the bikes and shipping them to different altitude locations, and EPA standards), but the answer is simple, the CO2 level as delivered new was way off. It was running at 7.4% (rich), they adjusted it to 3.5% (leaned it out). HUGE difference in performance off the line. If anyone has the same bike and is experiencing this problem, make the adjustment, you won't be disappointed. Next, I will be setting my JD Power Surge back to their recommended performance setting and see what happens. If I would have had the CO2 adjusted first, I would never have looked into purchasing the JD Power Surge. Will update you if I notice improved performance with the new settings. Thank you all for your advice and opinions that led me to this solution. I was almost going to upgrade to a different bike, but now there is no reason to... performs great!
