  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2010 TXC 250 - Bike Cuts Off Randomly

Phoenix

Husqvarna
AA Class
Ok, I've got a little issue that is more of an annoyance than anything, but I'm hoping someone will have some guidance for me.

As I've been riding my (new to me) 2010 TXC 250, I've had some incidents where the bike has just turned off. At first I attributed it to poor clutch control since I've been riding a Rekluse-enabled bike for so long. I'm not sure that's entirely the problem, though, as it has happened in a broad range of circumstances: accelerating out a corner, climbing a hill (both times at the peak), hard braking down to a corner, and just accelerating in a straight line. It doesn't do it with much fanfare...no pop or anything. And it starts right back up with the button.

My first thought is to take it apart and look for wiring issues. Something similar happened on my KTM when an estart button wire snapped and shorted. Does anyone else have any ideas of what to look for while I'm hunting and pecking? I'm new to this fuel injection thing (at least on a dirt bike), so I don't know if that could be related. I'm pretty sure the previous owner had an aftermarket pipe on it.

The bike also has the neutral issues I've read about on this forum. The bike won't go into neutral when stopped but running, but will fall right in when the bike is off. Sometimes, when starting in neutral, I have to rock the bike to get the starter to turn it over. Starts right up in gear. Doubt that's related, but I thought I'd throw it out there just in case.

Thanks all!

Your bike will turn itself off is your battery get's disconnected. I have seen this problem before. Inspect your battery terminals and if they are tight and no corrosion, check the wiring from battery. Problems usually occur where the positive wire goes thru the frame right at the battery.

I had a similar problem that was cleaned up using a PC V and auto tune. I too thought it was my laziness from having a Rekluse for the last 5 years, but a friend was riding it and also commented on it. After the PC V and auto tune we both think it runs a lot better. It seems like the bike either was getting too much gas or not enough at certain points and it would just kill.

Those bikes are pretty twitchy on the throttle for sure. It sounds like a cruddy or loose connection somewhere. Check spark plug boot and wire? Connections at the coil under the tank? All fuses are firmly installed? After that it may be stripping the bike down and inspecting every connector for pulled pins or corrosion or maybe a wire rubbing through insulation. Hope you find it quick so you can ride the little beast without worry.

Have you had it hooked up to iBeat yet to see where your CO and TPS settings are? May find something there, too.

Good luck

The 2010 models had some crappy batteries at the start of the year (not Yuasa) where the guts fell apart inside.

Also the wiring loom was very thin (poor quality for a dirtbike) so check for wear behind the throttle body and other places where it comes into contact with the frame. Also check for water inside the loom and corrosion.

If you plug it in the iBeat and it has a fault you will see it there unless it is something unusual.

The starter gears should have been recalled I think if its an early model as they changed the design slightly.

Check your impeller whilst your at it as some of them came loose.

My 510 doesn't like neutral whilst its running, its just one of those things I guess.
You could refresh your clutch fluid and see if it makes a difference, they do get hot by the pipe.

Brock :)

Awesome info. Thanks everyone! I'll haul it into the workroom tonight and start inspecting.

I don't have an ibeat yet and there's not a dealer around anywhere so hopefully that recall has been done already! I'll call Halls and see if they can help me identify the recalled gears.

Well I've finally had a chance to really inspect all the wiring start to finish. I've kind of just been putting up with the problem until now, but the weather is nice, race season is close, and I'm more motivated to get the problem solved. lol. Everything has been cleaned and seems to be free of wear. It seems as though the spark plug wire may be loose where it connects to the coil. What is the proper way to reattach this? From reading some other threads, it may just screw on? If that is the case, does that simply mean twisting the wire in?

Well I kind of twisted it in and put a zip ty around it and it seems to be making a good connection. I might invest in a new spark plug wire, though. Is anyone running a NGK wire on your TXC/TE 250? Anyone have a part number?

Also, as per the helpful ideas of Motoxotica and some folks here, we used the JD Jetting tuner to change the fuel settings up a bit. We rode all afternoon yesterday and it didn't shut off by itself once (I killed it twice. lol). Its still a bit hard to start, but using the button and the kicker at the same time seems to do the trick. I wish I didn't have to do that, though, so we'll probably keep working on it. I still haven't checked to see if my starter is gummed up as per another thread.

Your starter is most likely bad. Mine was and the new one doesn't feel a whole lot better. They start when cold then the starter seizes up when hot.

I also had the stalling before my bike got the EFI remap. It runs fine now, but I may have to richen up the mixture now that I have a new fuel pump. Bike is a little slow now.

The good news it that it is the best handleing bike I've ever riden.

I totally agree on the handling. It has a few quirks, but is night and day better than any bike I've ever ridden.

Did your fuel pump go out, or did you just upgrade?

It died twice during long sections during a sand enduro.

I pulled it 2 times in the woods with the 4 tools I pack in my camelback.

wiggled wires....got it to restart and made it to the checkout 50-55minutes late both times.

You have not lived until you pulled a electric fuel pump in the woods during a race twice in one day.
Spilled gas all over me too. Thank God no one was smoking that day!

If it helps, I've read some bad reports about the OE fuses. Apparently some are reporting odd problems as you describe only to find hairline cracks in the blade fuses. Might be worth a look. Also the fuel pumps work loose, causing random stops.
