  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

    Thanks for your patience and support!

2009 TE 450 reliability and fuel pump relocate?

Husqvarna
AA Class
I have had my 09 TE450 for a few seasons now and have not put to many miles on it yet, but this year we have some very long and far out trips in the planning. The whole F.I. setup worries me (thought about doing a carb conversion) but I dont think I'll go to that truouble. Also moving the fuel pump outside the tank would seem like a big plus, any advice about doing that and what pump to use would be great. So how are most 2009 TE's holding up for everyone? Do we all ride around worried about being stranded in the outback???... MAYBE I'm thinking to much?

I have worked on my bike over this winter and have it more setup for me, I cant believe how much stuff we have to do to a new bike. So far I have put a seat concepts seat on, lower and revalve the suspension, Bigger tank (Safari) Uptite skid plate, throttle kit, LED headlight and exhaust can and new tires. all of the above upgrades are very good products and now I want to get on the bike and ride it. :cheers:
Steve.

I have 7000 miles on my EFI 450, after I replaced the original pump with an after-market pump at about 1000 miles, I have had no problems with the EFI system. See my thread on dual-sporting my TE450.

I would suggest you buy a CAcycleWorks Husky pump and pack it in your bag. It's replaceable in the field and will give you alot of peace of mind for about $140

I have 6500 and over 275 hours on my 08 TE450, bring fuses! I had a cracked fuse in the field that you could not see with your eye, had I just replaced them I could have saved the humiliating feeling when towed back to camp by an orange bike. Other than that, fork seals twice, batterie, rad fan, nothing else has gone wrong with the bike. However, I did have a tight valve and am running the smallest shim now, next valve adjust will most likely be a overhaul.

What size is the smallest shim?

That would be a 1.90 I am sure. You have a smaller one?
I was running my smallest that 2.25 and not even able to put a 0.002 feeler gauge in. bike would not start due to the open intake valve, but did not leave me stranded on that occasion, was done with a long ride and was ready to load it up in the truck and she wouldn't fire. She popped a couple times and that was it. I checked everything else out as to why (spark, pump, de-comp..all good) because I had just adjusted the valves about 1500 miles before I didn't think of it till I asked George at Up-tite.

My HotCams shim kit goes down to a 1.20.

The 2009 service says the following in regard to the range of shims that are "supplied", I would think that if a 1.60 shim is supplied, it could be used.....:

Otherwise, lift the retaining clip (7) using a hook, let the rocker arm slide to one
side, extract the pad with a pair of pliers and check the thickness;
Depending on the result, fit a new pad (as spare parts, pads are supplied ranging
from 1.60 mm to 2.60 mm in steps of 0.05 mm) and return the clip and rocker
arm;
Check the valve clearance again and, if it’s correct, reassembly the removed
parts using the reverse procedure.

Well, hush my mouth. I have at least one more valve adjust before a rebuild. THANK YOU! Now I need to order one or two. I have the Kit from Motosprotz and it only ranged from 2.25 up to 2.85 and 5 a piece, wonder why it goes so high over your 2.60 range??? could be why that HotCams kit cost so much you say. I picked up the 1.95 from George and I thought he said that was the smallest, I could be wrong as we talk for a while before I leave the shop and not everything sticks anymore. Maybe thats the smallest to go to be on the safe side of not needing a new head. IDK, I am not a rebuilder, just a repair kind of guy. Thanks for hope! I am thinking to do the top end only if the cylinder walls look sweet that will give me a sign if the crank/rod bearings are going. Ok, we did a thread heist. LOL. Oh, thanks for posting that fuel pump from cycleworks, it will come in handy for a extra and not as bad as the stock unit complete.

ROCKY4by- I don't know what you are planning for trips- but I have ALOT of confidence in my 09TE450 because it has never let me down or stranded me: I am guessing I have about 8000 miles (no commuting-and avoid pavement like I am barefoot on a hot day). The more you ride it and gain confidence in it the less you will worry. Read about the "failures" but learn from them what you can and be prepared. I have only blown fuses for lights thus far- but had the fuses with me. I never had a pump issue- but I wired it early on to keep it in place- before I had an issue. Its possible that it jumping out of its position leads to early failure because it draws fuel that does not go through the filter bag- securing it properly early on may be preventative.

Palmer84one- you can get individual shims from RockymountainATVMC- they sell 9.48 Pro-X shims individually or in kits in different ranges
