  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2008 TE450 won't start hot!!!

Ok, I bought a 2008 TE450 a few weeks ago with 2500 k's. I have taken it on two rides and the hotter it gets the worse it starts.

1. Cold start. bang fires straight up.

2. After riding at speed it starts fine (I'm guessing its not hot, plenty of air thru the radiator).

3. Getting onto tighter tracks it will start but I have to use the manual decomp then a little throttle once I realease the decomp (occasionally gets a bit of a backfire type pop).

4. Once its hot it won't electric start but it kick starts ok, 4-5 kicks.

5. Once its don't a bit of single track work it won't even kick start but it will bump start fine.

Once it is going, it idles fine and pulls fine right thru the rev range. If I leave it sit for 3-4 minutes it starts ok.

I was told by a bloke at the local Husky dealer that it was a problem with the auto decomp origanally fitted was an MX decomp rather than an eduro. So after the first ride I took it in and had the auto decomp replaced...took it out for a ride today, if anything it's worse. So thats $250 wasted.

I have drained the fuel because the previous owner said it was sitting for 4-5 months unused, he says he didn't have the problem.

The only other thing I have done is twisted the mixture screw a bit to adjust the idle, which didn't actually seem to do anthything. It's idling at about 1600 rpm so i'm guessing the mixture is ok.

Any tips appreciated. Extremely frustrating!

What does the fuel pump sound like when its hot and you turn the key to ON or set the kill button to ON and pump initializes, does it sound labored or different than it does when it's cold and boots up?

Sounds like it charges up the lines the same as cold, takes about the same time...

I have been reading that the temp sensor maybe a common issue? I have spoken to the dealer who did the auto decomp and he has agreed to have it back to check out free of charge so I will see how it goes, any suggestions before I take it back would be greatly appreciated.

One more thing, I have checked a few times when the bike should be running pretty hot (was out the other day in 30C degrees on some pretty tight stuff and big hills) and I haven't seen the thermo fan running...does that make it more likely to be a problem with the thermo sensor?

Maybe find a way to jump the fan so it runs all the time. An infrared thermometer gun would help figure out how hot it is running. They are pretty cheap now and I use mine for all kinds of things around the house. Are you saying the starter won't turn over when hot?

I was just out working on my 08 TE450. I noticed that the exhaust pipe is very close to the starter. Less than than an inch. Maybe add a heat shield between the starter and the pipe or wrap the pipe in header tape in that area.

Check the number on the radiator cap, OEM was a 1.4 bar, the PO might have put a 1.8 cap on there, effectively increasing the pressure that the radiator operates at.

After re-reading your symptoms, they started sounding alot like mine, with my rad water in the combustion chamber problem. Tight single track heated up my motor, making for big pressure on the rad water, I would stop for awhile, and water got pressed thru a bad spot on the head gasket, making the bike hard to start, until the water was cleared out.
Next time it happens, pull your spark plug and see if it looks like the 2nd pic. That's mine after it sat hot, then wouldn't start.

See the rest of my pics on my thread.
