  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2008 te 450 fuel problems

In downhills i run out of gas but i have about 3 lts gas on my tank. Is the fuel pump in the correct position on this model?

Is the pump in the lowest place of the tank? I think that in dawnhills all the gas goes to thr front of the tank and thats why it runs out of fuel. Is it possible?

Have to be a bloody steep and long hill.
If the pump is correctly positioned & secure and the hoses inside the tank are ok then I'm at a bit of a loss.
How old is the fuel filter? Maybe try a new one.
Test the pumps performance both pressure and flow.
Does your bike have a tilt sensor that stops the engine in case of a fall?

I was thinking electrical. Does it idle okay? Possibly a problem with the filter or regulator that's exacerbated by the tilt.

start the bike up, let idle a bit, and then pick up the rear wheel.

it's a weird problem.

also, characterize the problem for us... as soon as you head down, the motor stops or does it take a 5 min descent? how steep are we talking here? rough trails or smooth road? does it sputter? is restarting an issue? etc.

In rough dawnhill trails if my tank is full with gas idont have any problem. In the same trail if im not full i have only 2-3 lt on the tank i run outt of gas. When the trail is over and find a streight road it starts up and runs fine!

Can the fuel pump drag gas from the front of the tank in dawnhills with some mods?

Before you start modifying things I'd suggest something else is not quite right.
I don't know about your particular model but my RS500 (which is effectively a 2010 TE510) has a rubber shroud or cover inside the tank around the fuel pump. I suspect it's to hold a supply of fuel at the pump when the fuel level is low and sloshing around the tank.....does your bike have this?

So that is happening is possible?

...not with 2-3 liters in the tank, unless you're going down long 45° hills.

BTW, are you accelerating downhill or coasting? I've been assuming coasting but who knows?

something is wrong. Could be plumbing (internal hose, filter, regulator), electrical (loose connection), or mechanical (your pump isn't strapped down etc). I suppose there could be a plastic bag floating around in there too.... naw. but your problem is probably NOT the inability to draw gas from the front of the tank when going downhill- I'm guessing.

give us some GOOD pictures. Lots of 'em.

Also you should get 100km per tank; 150km on a good day.

A poster here had a rich running 450 and he got 25mpg (about 10km/lt)

I dont have anything like cover or rubber shroud inside my tank only the fuel pump

The placement of the pump in the rear of the tank is not a bug, it's a feature and rather convenient when you run low on gas.
While it will stall on downhills it will start back up and run on uphills. If you are running out of gas it is the uphills where you need engine power the most.
Harder to push uphill!

OTOH 3 ltrs of gas is too much for this to start happening. The stock tank only holds 6 ltrs of usable fuel and that is a half a tank.
So some reason that pump is not picking up fuel properly.
