Hello from sunny South Africa!
Due to the most amazingly fortunate circumstances, I will be taking delivery of a 2008 510 SMR soon. Brand spanking new, still in crate.
Would there be anything specific that I should watch out for considering it's age and lack of any maintenance?
Are there any known issues with these bikes that I should be aware of, or perhaps sort out before getting it going? Even though the thing is still crated, it has run out of warranty, so I'd like to be as safe as possible.
How restricted were the 2008s? I understand the FI map might be quite rich... I live at altitude (1400 m), would a dealer be able to load a more suitable map? I will be getting it on a dyno as soon as it is run in of course, but obviously the better the mixture from the get-go, the better for the motor's life?
I won't be racing on a track, but I don't think it will lead a very easy life either, commuting 10-odd km to work every day. Do you guys stick to the racing service intervals anyway, ie. 500 km oil changes, 1500 km valve inspections?
I am looking at getting some sliders for it for starters, and obviously the exhaust will go once run in - where would be a good place to start looking at some other bling, like levers, pegs, wavy discs, bar-end mirrors, engine covers, etc? Anything specific I should look at?
What OEM tyres should I be expecting? Are they any good?
Wow - 20 questions
Thanks!
