  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Thinking about buying a 04 TC 450 that looks to be in good shape (haven't seen it yet). What aspects should i be aware of regarding the engine? Is there a way to tell if the cylinder head has been upgraded (I have read about the valve issues). Need info as I am going to look at it tomorrow. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

No way to tell if the valves have been replaced just by looking at it. If the bike is hard to start, the valves could be tight. If it fires right up, the valves may be in spec but short of pulling shims and measuring them, no telling how much longer they will last. Keep in mind that its a 9 year old MX bike. Any bike that old is going to have a few issues. Fortunately the big block Italian 4 Stroke is easy to work on.

I was wondering if there were casting numbers or marks on the head that would identify whether it was the original or a later head? I've read that the early 04's could have problems, and that the later 04's had better valves. And bikes with the decompresser lever on the clutch perch were the later model vs bar mounted which are early versions. Is this true?

I've heard that thing about the decomp lever too, don't know if that is a reliable indicator. Both my 04 250 and 450 have the decomp lever separate from the clutch M/C. No valve problems with either.
