  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1st TE511 Valve Adjust Advice

Husqvarna
AA Class
Well boys, approx 3200 miles (5000km's) on the 2012 TE 511, approximated as had a Timbersled Kit on it this past season.
Bike has been awesome, and still puts a smile on my face, every time I release the clutch .
Power was down so opened it up to check valve clearance. Results as follows:
L exhaust = .011"
R exhaust= .010"
L intake= .011"
R intake = .010"

Now correct me if I am wrong, but my service manual states the following specs:
Exhaust = .010" - .012"
Intake = .002"-.004"

It appears that the exhaust valves are in spec. , but the intakes need adjustment.

So the local dealers are are all hot and bothered with the White/Blue/Yellow Husky's. Not the Red ones.

Please enable patience with the following questions:

(1.) Have heard of the term half balls , unfamiliar with this term( I have ridden with guys with no balls ) .
Owned many Japanese bikes, and unsure if straight shims or these half balls are utilized on the intake valves?

(2.) Can a shim kit still be available for these Kymco engines ? (eBay, BMW dealer , etc )

(3.) During the shim process I anticipate the cam chain needs release of tension to remove cams, and if so, does the lower gas tank need to be removed ?

Have turned wrenches on all my bike for years, machinist by trade. Just want to ensure longevity for this 511.
Still feel this bike is superior to any of the current plated dirt bikes.

Many of you have raced and have high mileage 511's so any advice/experience and tips are greatly appreciated .

Cheers!

Okay , cams are out , half balls removed from the intake rockers.
Can anyone recommend a dealer that still carries these half ball shims ?
According to the chart below , what size of half ball would be required to reduce the valve clearance to the
.002"- .004" ( .05 - .01 mm)

Wish I could help, but thank you for well documented process on your project. This bike seems a bit under supported so we have to stick together!

Regarding lack of parts availability, I find this quite disturbing that a 3 year old bike would be completely thrown out in the cold. Would contacting kymco directly be of any help? Did this engine see life in any other foreign makes?

FYI

Found some at a local dealer who used to sell the Italian Huskies.
The shims were in a dusty container on the top shelf of the parts area.
Anyway, will bolt it back together this week, and keep riding it !
Parts are still around , but you have to go hunting !
