  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hello all, I went to start my beautiful motorcycle today since it is pretty much all back together after repainting the frame, repacking all the suspension bearings, new plastics from DC plastics, getting out the dents in the exhaust, chain&sprockets, etc., and making it pretty all around.

Bike started a few days ago on the fourth kick. Nothing has changed with the ignition system since then. Yesterday I kicked and kicked and it would not start (proper kicks from TDC); the first few kicks weren't very determined on my part so I assumed from that point it was flooded.

Today I got it out and it still wouldn't start after many tries. I pulled out the plug and it looked slightly wet, so I dried it off and cycled the engine for a bit to clear out any built up gas. Put it back in and no luck. I then pulled out the plug dried it off again and pressed it against the head while kicking, and there was no spark. Tried a few different plugs; no luck. Checked wires for continuity and the ground is good, kill button isn't shorted, and all the wires are connected. Not sure how the stator/pvl is supposed to work and I don't know what impedance should be reading from the two wires coming out of it.

It has been dreadfully hard to start in the past sometimes, and push starting it has worked. After that, kicking it seems to be alright. I think it might work this time too, but it would be cool to actually start the bike with the kickstarter :D I'm just concerned about the no spark; it should be sparking when I kick it with the plug held against the head, right?

Sorry for the bad lighting. You sort of see the stator. I think it is an aftermarket PVL or whatever but I really don't know.

First make sure your kill switch isnt stuck on, disconnect the white and red wire near the coil.
Then put Spark Plug next to head kick it and see if it sparks...
Next seeing as your in the area make sure your earths are good so take the paint underneath the coil clamp off and some around an engine mount either head stay or lower bolt.

Still nothing
Change your ht lead these screw on and if your plug cap is resisted has a 5k ohm sign on chuck that in the bin and slap a non supressed one on there.

Still no spark? Check your insurance drive it to the nearest dodgy area and leave it.
Job sorted.

Any issues let us know
And if ya fix it let us know to please, too many unfinished threads out there.

That pic is bad but it looks like cr flywheel to me.

that is a really bad picture, but looks like internal rotor
I agree with juicypips unplug the kill button
if it is PVL contact them, pretty sure they are made in Europe, mine had a Penton reference
I sold my 92 with the PVL and the ignition manual went with it, but if someone has one that could help
to eliminate ground issues I run a ground wire from the back of the ignition to the back of the coil to be sure

Everything is grounded well, kill switch isn't shorted, stator reads voltage when kicked, all wires have good contact with no breaks. I tried it without the kill switch plugged in just to be sure as well; as of now still no spark.

I have not. It was brand new, and I've cleaned it thoroughly multiple times but I'll pick up a couple more new ones tomorrow and try again. Also, the spark plug cap is just a coiled wire that stabs into the lead. I cut some of the insulation back, wrapped it around the coil and soldered it on.

stabs? most plug caps thread onto the lead...your cap doesnt have a "screw" inside?

great looking year of hooskies! if you get a pipe and silencer you will shed alot of weight and REALLY wake it up. the stock pipes are horrendous double wall units.

that year is a bugger to find a pipe for as it goes over the exhaust outlet,, not into,, as most bikes do

Yep it just stabs on the wire and the rubber boot slides over it.. Almost looks like a spring with an end cut off

weird! i would definitely get a good ngk cap on there, be it hard plastic or soft rubber. that looks like a cheap lawnmower cap!

if you look inside the boot usually the stab is actually a threaded affair as justintendo was referring to

i forgot about that..the first year cylinder. will make it hard to find used but dp makes them for the first year 360 just like following years.
