  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

    Thanks for your patience and support!

1986 XC 400 I think

Hi Guys,

I recently picked up a mono shocked, water cooled, 2 stroked, disk - braked Husky for restore.

The guy told me it was a CR 500 but when I checked the serial numbers the frame was for an 85 CR 500 but the motor was for an 87 WR 400! I measured the bore and stroke and it's definitely a 400.

It's got a mikuni carb, rectangular brake res., SEM ignition, and no rear brake arm. When I went through my old Dirt Bike magazines from 1986 it looks exactly like a 1986 400 cross country (there are no decals left on the bike)

Anyone have any input on just what I have here exactly?

Most people on here will ask for some pics of your bike so they can see exactly what you are talking about and then they will be able to help out a lot more.... plus everyone likes see to bike pics, I know I do lol. Just my 2 sense and I hope you enjoy the bike!!

Thanks, that looks just like it used to but no headlight, maybe some day it will again... Nice awesome restore! Does yours have the sem ignition too?

I've rebuilt a '78 Cr 390, '77 Wr 390, '76 Cr 125 and a '93 WXC 350 but none of them had the sem ignition. There's no spark. What's the word on the sem ignitions?

I'll get some pics asap but right now it's just a pile of bones.

My bike has the Motoplat and have 2 WRs with SEM, They still work.

I have a friend with a 85 400 WR, SEM in that bike and that just died.

Waiting to hear if my coil I lent him will get some spark again.

Thanks Troy.

The jug should be black, but what ever paint was on it still looked fine, so i left it.
Forks are the correct color for the 86 and 85s had white legs.

It's definitely the black sem coil that's shot. Somebody said they start easier with the sem. Anybody confirm that?

I really like the way the silver aluminum jug matches the color of the stock forks on your bike. Nice touch!

I did a Honda motor like that once (no more rice burners for me now) Husky's rule

That 86 400 xc is beautiful & I know they work as well as they look!

Been riding it hard for 3 seasons now
I have yet to open up top end, done the water pump seals and bearing again since the the restoration and some clutch plates and the rest is normal maintenance. Been a good bike for the 500 i paid back then.

Did a few upgrades since that photo

Some old NOS Maier Racing blue shrouds from ebay.
87/88 CR front end, they made a big difference in stopping power and less flex. Not mega stiff, still has some flex but a lot easier on the fore arm pump.
The fender broke on a hill climb 1 day. They are over a $100 to buy at Husqvarna-parts so i went with the Acerbis one he has and that keeps more mud of my back when the Teraflex is roosting.

Over this winter the shock needs a rebuild, never been done yet i believe and the sprocket shaft bearing has to much play.

Hey Joe

Here is my old thread on the resto

Very cool!

Mine's in worse shape but looks a lot like that. But the motor is sound, shock looks okay. The frame is good, the pipe has surface rust but no dents or cracks so it will come up nice, blue fork covers are holding so fork legs and seals are fine. cables and stuff are good. The tank is ugly and looks like it was painted once. I'm thinking about sanding and painting it, any tips there?

Joe

Tried all that too Joe.

The color is not white under the top layer. It come from gas and oil sitting in the tank to long.
Paint will hold for a show bike with no riding or gas.
It will bubble up from gas coming through the plastic.
You can coat the inside and then the paint and decals stick.
But I just looked for a better, that was cheaper for me.
I watch ebay non stop, got 7 bikes to feed the love too.
Found the current tank for 35 bucks :) been on the shelf a long i guess.

Saw your location My cousin lives by Victoria.

I guess I'll see if it runs again first and then worry about how it looks. Awaiting a kick-start. Then I'll track down the sem coil. Needs a swingarm weld.
Here's a nice little '76 ct70 I restored for my kid. Sorry it's not a Husky. Cheers

my Scorpa riding buddy is the original owner of a ct110 1967 or8 i think his wife rode it a bunch and he still takes it out real regular :thumbsup: he's like 71 wish i was in as gooda shape as he is:applause:

The output voltages from the SEM drop with time and you end up with no spark at low revs making it impossible to kick start but will start by towing.
I use a Lifan CDI and coil on both my 85/400 and 86/240 and these work fine.
Very cheap and easy to get.
The CT110 CDI uses even less but is more expensive.

You can get the stator rewound but it is disappointing when it's returned and is no better than when it was sent.

The electrical systems are a bit of a mystery to me. Does that mean I could get a Lifan cdi and coil to replace the black SEM coil to use with the SEM stator on my 86/400? Any more details?

SEM stator
Yellow = lights
Black = earth
Orange = Trigger
Red = exciter

2 different types of CDI

I used this one [ The hard part was finding a plug to fit ]

But this one should work as well

The above is wrong and this is correct

IMPORTANT NOTE* The CDI you use must be a non advance type as these Husky's had NO advance.

If this does not work then it's only cost you $30 instead of hundreds.;)
