• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1985 250WR ID help

Folks,
I have a couple of 1985 Husky 250WR water-cooled twin shock bike carcasses. The engine prefix is 0974-xxxx. Has anyone heard of a 0973-xxxx prefix? I can't find 0973 listed anywhere but am talking with a guy that says that is his prefix on his motor. Looking to maybe get another parts donor bike and want to be sure I know what it is before going any further. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers.

Jimspac,
Thanks for the reply. I checked out the link you posted and it has the same info that I found elsewhere. There is no 0973 type engine prefix so, I am in touch with the guy that has the bike to make sure he didn't just misread it or need to scrape some paint in order to read it correctly. Cheers.

Mike

you say 0974 and then 0973. Which you asking? 0974 is 1985 WR250 0972 85 CR 250 0975 XC 250 09 is definiteley an 85 year motor. In fact 1985 was only year to use that prefix of 09 (maybe due to 4 models that year,; CR, WR, XC, and WRX or a tholdover from the LC models of 84 which used a 09 prefix but some 84 still used the good old 20-- tried and true numbering convention. Never heard of 0973 but then again maybe it was a place holder for the WRX but they used a 20-- for that. confused yet? dont be.

Joe,
Like I was saying in the first post, I am talking with a guy with an 85 250WR (twin shock) parts bike and he says his motor starts with 0973. I have 2 of these bikes and both my motors start with 0974 as they should. The frame numbers from mine are both before and after his frame number. I know that doesn't mean much since Husky frame and motor numbers don't match like the Japanese or Spanish bikes. But, it's some circumstantial evidence that I would think his number should be 0974. Why does this matter? Well, anymore, I am making sure I understand what I am buying/getting from someone. These old bikes have had many owners since new and many things done to them over the years. You never know whether you are buying someone's old science project or not. Cheers.

Mike
PS. Hey, by the looks of your picture, I'd say you need a good old fashioned cheeseburger!!!

nothing wrong with trying to be sure rd400, but it could be a different set of cases with great internals, or it could be the right numbers and everything and have major issues...if youve messed around with huskies enough, you know that there is an insane amount of things that swap..(my friend had an 84 250xc with a italian four stroke transmission in it..) i think what joes saying is that not to worry about it unless you are doing a concours restoration. heck even the swedes were known to put the wrong stuff on if it was laying around the factory..let us know how you make out!
