• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1983 wr lower shock mounting guards

Husqvarna
AA Class
i'm sure ive seen a picture somewhere of an 83 wr with welded on lower shock mounting guards.
a kind of welded on to the swing arm in front of the lower shock mounts metal guard arrangment.

basically to deflect any rocks, tree roots etc when in deep ruts from damaging the lower shock mounts.

im building a wr430 to compete in modern enduro's & trying to ensure no DNF's ****************************************

if anyone could post a picture or some info id be very grateful !

the shock mount is simply a hole through the swingarm....do you mean guard for the lower shock eye?

What happens at least to me is when I fall over/dismount/crash the collar that holds the bottom of the spring takes an impact. If you are lucky it kind of dis-locates if you are un-lucky it bends the shock shaft. I guess the same kind of thing could happen in a rut but that might be more of a concern for the ankles of the rider. The two I bent would not result in dnf. One was in an event, the other not really positive where or when it got bent. Modern enduros might take some attention to sound to avoid did not start dns.

The 1983 is really quite crashable the one that I know where it bent was on some pavement just out of the woods, gave it some gas and the rear end went out and the shock contacted the pavement. I enter at the end so a lot of mud was on the pavement.

After a while I remembered some more stuff. Those welds between the part that screws onto the bottom of the shaft and the circle that holds the hemi joint have very small welds. I do not recall breaking one but do recall repairing it and the weld penetration was extremely minimum.

The top of the shock on the left side came off and did result in a dnf. I suspect forces are making that 6mm/10mm head bolt want to come out. Even after that and paying attention to that detail it came off again not at an event though.

Cool! Someone has crash-proofed that frame for sure. Both shocks and engine have bars welded on. Must be ridden in rocky treacherous terrain. Certainly don't need it for Sunday rides and VMX. Husky steel is tougher than the Japanese licorice used at the time!

I can just see those thing lifting the wheel of the ground at critical moments. or catching on rocks and deep ruts. look like more trouble than the chance of smashing a shock bolt...

Great photos Michel. Do you have a Husky picture collection yourself or do you hunt on the Internet?

The steel these swingarms is made out of pulls a lot when welded on. What you are looking at, making two oval welds on the same side of the swing arm tube on both sides of the fork most likely will pull the ends of the swingarm apart even if restrained with something like the axle bolt and a piece of tube. Might consider stitch welding instead of what you see. I do not know if the frame and swing arm fork are made in a jig and then stress relieved or anything like that.

Chanson d'automne

Les sanglots longs
Des violons
De l'automne
Blessent mon coeur
D'une langueur
Monotone.

Tout suffocant
Et blême, quand
Sonne l'heure,
Je me souviens
Des jours anciens
Et je pleure

Et je m'en vais
Au vent mauvais
Qui m'emporte
Deçà, delà,
Pareil à la
Feuille morte
