  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1981 CR 430 Carb fine tuning Questions

Oldtimer

Husqvarna
AA Class
I just finished restoring a 1981 Cr430 and have some jetting questions. I am now running a 2.0 slide, 40 pilot jet, 460 main jet, R-0 needle jet, 6DH3 needle #2 position and mid range approx 1/3-2/3 throttle is a little lean. Bike starts in 3-4 kicks cold and 1-2 kicks warm, idles and runs great but slightly lean in mid causing a little more engine heat than I like. I tried a 450 main jet and needle #3 position and middle is rich, 450 main an needle #2 and top very lean, 440 main and needle #3 position and top is lean. So I am thinking of going to a Q-8 needle Jet or a 6DH2 needle but worried about the needles D-5 and D-6 position being to lean. I live and ride around 2,000- 4,000 ft. Anyone play this game before? Am I going in the wrong Direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Elevation plays a big part in jetting. I'm around 1100ft to 1500ft and I had a similar issue. Change one setting at a time and try it with the engine fully warm. I have an 82 430wr. when I had trouble around the 1/3 throttle I wound up going from 45 to 50 pilot. Then played with the air screw and got it pretty good. My bike seems to be sensitive to humidity. On very humid or rainy days I need to screw the air screw out some to lean it out. I've never had a bike that sensitive but it blubbers at 1/3 throttle on those days. I have the same needle and slide with a 440 main with the needle all the way lean, top groove.

You need a 3.0 slide and a R-0 or R-2 needle jet.

I tried many combinations but as i leaned it out it always overheated so I running the 2.0 slide, 450 main, R-0 needle jet, 6DH3 needle #3, 40 pilot and it gurgles a little form 1/3 to 2/3 throttle but it runs cooler so i take the cooler running and longevity over the crisp clean jetting and extra heat. Have a good one!
