  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

'13 511 runs like crap. Any ideas?

Any ideas before I've got to take it in?
Running with a PCV.

Near the top of a long, steep climb... Hi-RPM sustained for approx 15 seconds. Motor: "STUMBLE... STUMBLE... BACK FIRE... stall... wont' start, won't start, won't start.
1/3 mile push back to the truck.
Won't start. Will start! YA! Runs like crap. "Stumble, stumble, backfire, stall, won't start".
Multiple TPS resets.... Starts! "Stumble, backfire, stall, won't start." Repeat x 5 till I give up.
Load an old, stable map into the PCV. No change.

Check the basics like Robertaccio recommends. Fuel, air and fire. Last valve check where were your values? Have you made any changes recently that might point to the culprit? Need more information. How does the bike start cold?

Only has 430 miles on it. No valve check yet. No mods that would account for such a instantaneous, drastic falter. From, runs very strong to choke-cough-die- in 2 seconds. Then start-choke-cough-backfire-die, repeat.
Cold start = Start, cough, runs ok till put in gear and try to ride. Then, bog, cough, backfire, die.
I'll drain the gas just to say I checked it, though it wasn't off brand stuff; Chevron's best.
Fuel pump makes customary priming noise. Don't know if it would do that anyway even if it was bad.
I'll change out the gas, check it, disconnect the PCV and take it to the dealer. Sa la vie.

So what I gather is your the original owner and for 429 miles the bike ran great. Then on a long hard hot climb the bike flames out, dies and will not like to start and now will not run properly while engine is either hot or cold? Sounds like a fuel issue. (Pump or sediment clogging the injector). It could be a loose electrical connection too.

when mine broke down, it was an electrical connector. a pin started coming out the back of the connector and was only making an intermittent connection. put it back where it was supposed to be and she ran perfect

I've seen this happen before with a bad water temp sensor. I think they're $12 and easy to check first before diving into the fuel pump.

There's also a small brown ground wire off the stick coil which attaches to the side of the head. We remove this wire from the head and attach it to the frame above. What happens is that the wire breaks inside the insulation from the vibration. This too can cause the symptoms that you have explained.
