• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

'09 TE610 hard to start...

AA Class
Hey folks. Sorry if this has been covered, but I've searched here and google, and only seem to find carb related posts.

I have a new (to me) '09 TE610, and when the bike is cold, the starting seems somewhat difficult to me. With the cold start engaged or not, the bike needs several pushes of the starter to get going. Once it kicks on - it idles nicely and has no apparent issues (granted, this bike/brand is brand new to me).

The PO had installed a LV X3, and from what I can tell, the power up kit.

Once riding there is quite a bit of backfire, and if these two issues were on a carb bike, I'd be in a more confident place. I'm just not sure if this is "normal."

Are FI owners having a similar experience?

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like its running lean and might need the valves checked. It should fire right up and idle between 1500-1700 rpm. These FI bikes are lean even with the power up installed. A lot of us run a JD tuner to fix that. Hard starting is mostlikely the valves are out of spec. Could be bad gas too.

Thanks so much for the reply. I was hoping to have a little more time with it before having to dig into the valve check, but that makes sense. I've thought about the JD Tuner - which seems like it helps everyone who has installed it. Seems like it's a much simpler device than some of the more complicated Power Commander type rigs out there as well, which would be a positive for me.

Appreciate the help.

you are using the cold start lever on the clutch perch to start the bike cold ,right?valves on 610s usually get loose not tight so i am not thinking its a valve thing.the jd tunner might help.the temp sensor could be failing as well.dan

Definitely using the cold start lever. I may be over-reacting, but it definitely takes a few hits of the button to go. It's about time to check the valves anyway (6k+ miles) - and the cam chain too, so ill get to that soon and see how it helps (or not). I'll wait to finish that until messing with the JD Tuner, just so I can keep tracks of changes/improvements.

Do temp sensors go bad often?

Thanks.

13,400 miles on mine and no issues. No spare on hand because even if it goes out it's not a dealbreaker. Bike will still start just harder and takes longer.

I had the same problem with my new to me 08. I adjusted the valves and no difference. The bike had a weak battery when I got it. I charged it and it seemed to spin over faster but still didn't want to keep running with out playing with the throttle. I ended up replacing the battery and that solved the problem. Bike starts fine now without the enricher and idles away.....

Thanks for the input guys. I ordered a temp sensor to have, it was cheap enough to add to an order from Hall's. I put the battery on a tender when I first got it, and it didn't even need juice for more than a few minutes until hitting full charge. But I have still wondered about the battery. That's what my first guess was, having never dealt with these bikes specifically.

Regardless, I need to get in there to check valves anyway. And a new plug will go in too, and some fresh gas to be sure....

I ended up ordering a replacement temp sensor - just in case it seemed that it should be swapped in. It seems over the past week or so, the starts are getting easier (2nd or 3rd push of the starter now). I'm wondering if it was crappy fuel, as was suggested earlier in the thread. In NYC, it would not be shocking at all...

I'm going to get to the valve check soon. Appreciate all the help folks.

Hey, that was my bike! (I'm over here at the cafe because I miss it.)
Gas- I always used premium, but like you said, who knows in NYC. I doubt the gas is bad, because it should run like a champ once it's going. I would think bad gas would be a persistent problem while riding.
Cold starts- If I hit the starter cold and it didn't start, I'd open the throttle wide-open, hit the button again, and it would start. That was with the cold-start lever engaged. It usually took 2-3 pushes for me, when cold. However, I didn't often ride when it was cold out, and this was my first FI bike.
All of the programming was done by the previous owner, but I felt like it was spot-on... never felt the need to mess with the tuning.

Hey**************************************** Actually, since I first posted this - it has started to fire up on the first or second push. It may well have been some flaky fuel. I ended up ordering the JD Tuner to be able to tweak it a bit, but it really has been riding quite well. This thing is a last, and I haven't touched my other bike since I got it! :)

You still headed to Pine Barons?

Nice, good to hear. I'll be in the Pine Barrens this Sunday (Meteor Dual Sport) and the following Sunday (Hammer Run). Both rides are 2-day events, but I can only do Sunday for each.
You should do one/both- you've got a great bike for it! Let me know if you do. (Heh, we don't need to communicate on a public board and bore everyone.)
