    Hi guys!

My freshly assembled engine only has 1st and 2nd when running. When not started I can sometimes find more gears, but it's irregular and the shifter sometimes gets stuck.

How is it supposed to go together? I'm a bit desperate as the national championship is on Sunday.

Any insight would be VERY helpful!

    Thanks in advance, Lasse.

Did you preset the shift barrel to the right gear ? It has to line up in right gear when cases are put back together. If answer is yes thats good.

To back tract a bit it should have been set into fourth gear first and then make sure on the shift shaft engagment gear two teeth would show at about the one oclock postion. This is on late 70s and this 80 250, other models can be different.

This gear sets under the barrel

Great info! Some say third gear, others say 4th.

Can you describe which #'s here that need to match? Just to be clear :)

I'm pretty sure 4th gear. I did the same thing. Sucks splitting the case again.

This year should be fourth but you have to have 2 teeth of the shift shalf gear showing, i mean exposed at or under the shift barrel That
gear is #71 in exploded view

Watch your spring and the lever it on top/ above the shift barrel, i have seen this bent ( How ? who knows?) and or the spring hooking around the flat lever just not right postion for smooth movement. This holds the little round roller. just look for smooth movment.

The procedure is 4th gear for 6 speeds and 3rd gear for 5 speed. I just did an 80 250CR engine a few months ago and had to split the cases twice to get it to work even with the procedure printed out. I made sure it shifted properly before assembling the engine any further.
