  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Throttle/Return cable

So my last trip to Baja resulted in a snapped throttle cable end. Lucky I was able to Jerry rig the return cable so that I could get home. I think they should make a set nub/end thingy with an Allan set screw that you can throw in your pack in case something like this happens.

Anyway I am installing the new cables today, and noticed that one is a bit longer. Which one is the longer one? The throttle or the return? Does it matter? It's only about an inch or so longer. It's for a 2007 TE450

I looked in the manual and searched online and couldn't find the answer.

Thanks,
Blake

Hmmm….. I am not sure off hand. I just do it this way (if it helps) sorry if I confuse you more or misinterpret the intent of the question-

But the two cables should meet each other and pair up and fit into the throttle housing. The throttle will have 2 holes. Spin the throttle so that the two holes are on the top. The cable that is most forward towards the fender matches up with the hole on the throttle wheel that is nearest the rear of the bike. Put that cable in that hole. Now spin the throttle forward guiding the cable until the other hole is near the top again and put the other cable in that hole. The First cable was the return and the second one was the pull cable.
Now route the cable back to your carb or throttle body. The Pull cable goes on top and the return goes on the bottom (pull goes over the throttle wheel and the return goes under the throttle wheel. Make adjustments- ride.

Thanks for the reply. I know how to install them correctly, it's just that one of the cables is about an inch longer, and I don't know which cable that is (the throttle, or the return). Both fit/work both ways, I just don't know which way is the proper one.

Thanks,
Blake

Well I figured it out. If this question ever comes up for anyone else the longer cable is the throttle cable. The shorter cable is the return.

Hi, Blake! I have absolutely nothing to add to your throttle cable thread other than I wanted to say "hi" and ask how you're doing

Haven't seen you around in awhile.

I'm glad you got the cable thing figured out, though. Good to know!

I'm not really sure why a return is used on these bikes ... I even took mine off several months ago hoping to reduce the amount of tension on the throttle opening but it had no effect here ...

It's a spare!
The spring alone works well enough, but it also acts as a backup in case something should break, or get jammed such as tightness at full lock that can happen especially with taller bars. I had my throttle cable break on me in the middle of a ride with nothing but nasty switch backs to get out. Sure was glad the return cable could be swapped and get me back to camp.

Removing the return did not make the throttle any easier to twist so maybe I'll add the return back to have as a spare ...
