  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Sprocket setup and chain length

The street/supermoto sprocket setup for my 2009 TE250 was 12T front and 42T rear when i bought the bike. The chain length seems OK with that setup. I'm planning to switch back to the original 13/50 enduro setup. Guess i'll need a longer chain as well but how much longer would it need to be?

OK. Maybe a dumb question but the chain seems to be in good shape so could i just "extend" the existing chain to the required amount of links?

I keep the original chain along with the new one for my 12/50 setup. That way I can still switch over to 12/40 if I've got a bit of road and a not too technical trail

Are you guys sure about the 13/50 (or 12/50) setup along with the 112 link chain? I just set up my TE250 2009 that way and the chain is really tight. There's no way i can get even close to the 35mm clearance (as recommended in the manual). The adjustment screws at the end of the swing are all the way in. In fact i had to go with the 12/50 to even get the chain on in the first place. The chain is a DID 520VX2 if it's of any relevance. Hope i don't have to buy a new f****n expensive chain cause i cut it to 112...

I recounted today. Stock 112 plus master. Mine a 310 but think same. I run 114 now with 13/52. New chain came 120. Remember the 35mm chain slack is with the swing arm compressed until straight line from drive sprocket, pivot, and axle. I really try to only give good info.

My sticker is long gone. Just re-read the manual and uncompressed could be right. Strange Italian translation. Will have to measure again. Is measure at full extension like on stand? If so, sure a lot easier. Still....... I counted 112 pins holes on stock chain. Thanks.

Just put a RK X-ring chain on my 2012 TE310. Used a 120 link chain and took a few links off. 13/45

So, thinking a 120 link item is what you want, fairly standard for dirt setups aroun 13/50 or so. My dealer had mostly that length.

No problem shilo020, I hold no one but myself responsible. I simply should have checked before cutting. Thanks for your input!

I'll be putting a new chain on mine today, I always put the chain on, all 120 links, on the sprockets I want to use, in this case 12/43. I know that the only other combo I will use is a 13/43, so I put the chain on, put my 35mm piece of PVC tube under the chain on the swingarm, wrap it around the sprockets and put the axle all the way back in the adj range and then mark the chain, and then cut it. With the axle all the way back, I know I will have room for the bigger 13t CSS later on.

When the CSS and the swingarm pivot and the rear axle are all in a line, that is the tightest point in the process. The 35mm slack is when the rear suspension is unloaded.

I cut an opening in the plastic piece, right where the manual says to measure the slack, and I cut several pieces of PVC so I have one in all my tool locations and truck.
