Got it today, the wait is over finally a 510 was for sale up here.
Drove 3 hours to get it and never saw a picture.
Had to beat any 1 else out to buy it, the listing was posted last night.
1700 Canadian dollars, dirt cheap. Fired up first kick and I beat the guy to his house as he left work early and never warmed it up on me.

It goes like crazy haha, has a head gasket leak so some coolant will mix with the oil if you ride right now.

Good score!! That is a 1987; the water cooler was released in the summer of 1986 but is called a 1987. I own the same bike but mine is a cross country. You have an "interesting" water hose routing set up on your bike. The factory routing was on the front of the cylinder, not wrapped around the back of it, but that can be easily corrected.

    Update, getting right at it.
Clutch cover is toast, could be the only leak.

Does it have the 85-86 linkage or the 87-88? I call that tank/radiator shroud 85-86 but only have the one 4 stroke in this section.
My 1988 is more worn in but has never had any head gasket issues.
Starting on the first kick is normal, when cold.

Its a 87 model, the 86 is air cooled and still has 85/86 linkage. The leak is the from the water pump seal.
The area around the seal was gone and coolant could not leak out the weep hole, it had been closed off with a screw.

Did a leak test with vacuum on the top, held 15 no problem

I sold a 1987 husky 510 to a guy from colorado that was passing thru the area on his way to a giant pumpkin contest in Vancouver BC. He won the contest and the pumpkin in the back of his truck was huge !

With the clutch cover removed, now would be a good time to inspect the oil reed valve that hides behind the clutch assembly...

Just check that the reed petal is not loose, bent, cracked or buggered up in any way. This is sort of the oil pump for your motor, (a motor that does not have an oil pump). The Husky workshop manual says to do this every 5 oil changes but I have to admit I let mine go longer than that although I do change my oil quite often seeing that it only holds about a quart. If you do remove the reed be sure to use locktite when reinstalling it.

Speaking of oil, be sure to inspect the oil screen, (filter) under the small oval black plastic cover just below the cylinder on the left side of the motor. I check and clean mine practically every oil change.
