  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

pulsation in clutch lever

AA Class
bike is 09 smr 510 with about 4500 miles. i noticed the clutch lever has a pulsation when just starting to pull it, it goes away the about 1/3 of lever travel. it seems to be getting worse, almost knocking. normal and i just noticed it , or something going on? thanks

Time to pull the clutch cover and inspect the springs and cover plate, also the frictions and steels for warpage. You need to do it soon because, depending on what is wrong, catching it early will save you money.

Took apart this morning, everything looked fine. How much moving around should the part that holds the friction plates have? It has some play and depending on its position spinning the inner basket is either butter smooth to fairly rough.

Do you mean that if you rotate the inner clutch hub that the drag increases and decreases as you rotate it? If so there is some warpage somewhere. Try laying the plates on a flat surface like glass and have a look. Also mic the plates for thickness variation and look for abnormal wear or hot spots.

There is normally some play in the basket and at 4500 miles the bearing it turns on could have some wear. They are not that expensive and eay to change.
When you say the "inner basket", you must be talking about the hub that the steel plates engage?
If so, the hub is attached to the transmission main shaft, so if there is roughness, you are either feeling the trans gears or the bearings that the shaft turns on.

Did you look closely at the flat throwout bearing and it's hardened washer? Any roughness there could transmit right to the clutch lever.

T/o bearing and washer look good. Yes its the inner basket I'm spinning (minus the steels and fraction plates). Its the outer stationary part that has some play, and depending on its position as to whether the inner basket is smooth or rough when spun.

I don't know about the 510 basket, but I just got one to replace a notched one on a 125 I'm restoring and it was $79.77.

played with it some more. all the plates look great. i see the outer part i thought didnt move, does of course move, just doesnt free spin . the inner part growls pretty good, so i just need a tool to hold the basket thing whilst i loosen the nut to get it further apert to check the bearing(s)

basket is out. the bushing the outerpart (flywheel?) rides on looks ok, but may replace it. the mainshaft has an easy .010 play. apparently when it is centered, the shaft rotates nice a nd smooth, but when its out a little, the shaft growls and the clutch assembly will gyrate. i can see this may be where the pulsing into the lever was coming from. if so, is the main shaft bearing going to be a split case deal?

If the play in the mainshaft is in and out (axial), it is normal. Up and down play is a different story. The transmission bearings paress into the cases from the inside.
It might be a good time to load the bike up and take it to someone (dealer) that can look at what you have.
