Picked up an '88 430 auto that needs some TLC

I'm entering my mid-life crisis in the form of an '88 430 auto, I owned an '87 430 auto back in the day and really enjoyed it until clutch issues started cropping up, at which point I sold it and moved back to 250's. My mid-life crisis is centered around a very nice '88 auto that seems to have little wear on it visually, but I pulled the side cover and discovered that there are some rub marks from the first gear drum. Also notice that the kick return spring "pawl" is broken off and missing. The first gear drum has a small amount of play in it which I assume is the reason for the rub marks...is that normal and if not, what should I be looking for? Does anyone out there have a spare "Pawl" that they would be willing to let go of? I plan to build her up as a racer for the vintage XC series here in the north atlantic and am excited to get her going again.

Congratulations on finding the proper treatment for a mid-life crisis, another vintage Husky! Just remember, although your reflexes probably aren't as fast as they used to be, that 430 probably is.

That's Great! Now lets see some Pics

Until there is a source/supply for the first gear clutch assembly and associated parts think automatic snowmobile and use accordingly. Chances you would need some altitude to find snow in VA. You state you had one prior, The shoes in those and the 500 auto were not bronze with slots on a slight angle like the 420 and prior. I have had bad luck with the taper on the drive hub sort of welding itself and I re torqued multiple times which is more of a pain with the water cooling on. That water cooling also made it impossible to feed oil into the end of that crank end.

My midlife crisis was 27 husqvarna bikes, 15 restored runners 99 Suzuki 1200 bandit, 99 Polaris quad., 98 husqvarna 250wr, then a 99 husqvarna TE610e. Once it starts it's habit forming. 76 Suzuki ts185.

So I installed the kick return pawl, put it back together, then had the kicker get stuck mid stroke. Pulled it apart and found this....

I was able to get my local hot rod shop to mill off the broken piece, then tig weld a lug in place and drill and tap it....good as new. I timed the kick lever and put it all back together, SHAZAM!! works great an the bike started after a few good swift kicks! Can't wait to get her out on the trail!

I loaded up the old auto and went to the Mckee's Sky Ranch PV cross country race and had mixed results. The bottom end is too rich and needs to be cleaned up, the mid seemed to clear up and pull well but I ended up on my head very early in the race and pinched a nerve in my back which ended my day. The Auto is fast and fun to ride, that's for sure! The race starts around the 3:25 min mark.
