Optimum gearing on 73' CR400 for track use ... ?

It's been a while people ... Hello to everyone :)

I am getting my 73' CR400 ready for a few east coast races this year. To date I have run a 14/48 gearing ratio. During races I am always fishing between 2nd and 3rd gear, second is a power house but runs out too fast, third is strong too, but possibly too 'tall' and can bog quite easily if the rpm drops too low or I come back on the power on an incline or out of a corner. So, given that my gearing is tall (big front and small rear) should I try to go the other way and try to make 3rd a lower gear and reduce my need to use 2nd quite so much? Can I create a wider 3rd gear through gearing? - more track versatile?

I am not sure if I have explained myself very well here (!)

    Any thoughts?

If you lower the gearing you will go through each gear more quickly. I would get a 13t countershaft sprocket and try it. It will make third less likely to bog, may be all you need.

go down 1 on the front as suggested, 3rd will be more useable. and fourth as well. you should be able to carry a bit more speed into the corners in 3rd and run out nicely rather than have it go "nuts" in second
