• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

New guy with a new (to me) TE610

Yellomantis

Husqvarna
Picked up a 2008 TE610 off a guy locally on Craigslist, and I was wondering if there is a list of common problems or specific things I should look out for...

The only mods it has (that I know of) are a Leo Vance Ti exhaust, power up kit installed, and Acerbis hand guards.

I know the front tire is going to need to be replaced soon, and I'll probably change out the rear as well at the same time to a matching tire. Right now I'm looking at a Pirelli MT21 set or the Metzler 6 days extreme. If there's anything that you guys that can suggest, I'm all ears! My riding is going to consist of 75% highway and 25% dirt, but I don't want to sacrifice dirt-ability for street-ability. I will eventually be getting a set of supermoto wheels and tires for street use and have a dedicated set of dirt wheels/tires, but I want something to get me by for now.

I came from the world of Harleys, so I know nothing about chain lube, so I'm going to need some advice on that one. I definitely don't want something that's going to fling everywhere and make a mess...

I will be doing a lot of night riding, so a good headlight is a must. How well does the stock headlight low beam work? I would have known already, but my low beam is burned out, so high beam only right now, and that doesn't light up the road for nothing!

For the life of me, I can't find the oil filter on this thing! Anyone care to give me some insight on this one? LOL... Also, what oil should I be using once I start the oil changes, and what's the recommended change intervals? I have heard 10w60 is a good oil, but I'm not sure if Mobil1 is available in that weight, nor do I know if Mobil1 is a good oil for this bike. It worked great in my harleys!

I have found out, through a 200 mile ride, that the stock seat HAS TO GO!!! I did a little research via Google and found the Corbin seat, but dang those guys sure are proud of it! $400!?!?!?!? Really??!?!

I have also noticed that the stock digital instrument cluster no longer flashes when the turn signals are flashing, but it worked when I test rode it... Strange...

Last request, does anyone know of some grips that are a little fatter than the OEM ones? I'm having trouble getting a good grip due to the small grips.

Thanks guys! Here's looking forward to a long ride into the sunset!:D

I will do a quick fly by here....

Look at the Shinko 700 or 705 for that type of riding...worked fine on my 610. Also, see oil below.

Trail Tech makes some plug in headlight kits, the stocker is dangerous at night.

Filter is internal under round cover. Plus there are filter screens in both sides of the engine. I will let someone who has been there more recently fill in details.

Use whatever oil you and your dealer agree to in the privacy of your confidential conversations :-) Everyone has an opinion on this.

AC 10 great tire and DOT

this is great for the chain after a good cleaning w/ WD-40.
See the round red cover, that's the oil filter

and use a HF 563 filter. You'll find a screen filter on the LHS under shifter. Check that every other time and an other screen on RHS inside case cover at very bottom, but most only check that every 5k. Motul 10-60 is great oil. +1 on seat concepts!

I can get you copies of the owners manual if you need it as soon as I get home from Fla. Also check in on ADV rider in the 610 sign in thread. Lots of good info and know how over there!

The 6 days tire will last just about that, 6 days. The Pirelli 21's are pretty good, and I normally run Dunlop 606's, it is a a good all around tire. More streetable are the Pirelli Scorpion MT 90 A/T's, they are my go to street tire. I haven't tried the AC 10's yet, they may be my next tires.

See above for chain lube, I get it at Lowe's.

Some folks run 15w40 for oil, some run 20w50 and some run the 10w60. Just don't run the "Energy Saving" oil. The Clutch runs in the transmission oil, any extra slipperyness like Moly will kill it.

The stock light sucks. I run the Trail Tech light, but changed the bulbs to 55 watt. The dim is still dim, but better than the OEM and the bright is very good. I also run 2 Piaa lights on each side.

Probably need to fix your kickstand, if its not already.

Seat Concepts, Guts Racing, Renaszco Racing are all good seat companies.

There's lots of aftermarket brighter and HID lights available. Pick one and go with it........... or tape a mag light to your helmet, it would be brighter than stock.

Corbin sucks in general, and in specific they don't know squat about dirtbikes. In colorado I can send you to a local, but Renazco is one of the well known ones, but check our sponsor list here.

I'd suggest looking into the Heidnau K60 or SuperMefo for a rear tire. I run TKC80's for the front.

Other goodies to look at and see if they fit your eventual needs.

Highway Dirtbikes
7602 Racing and the rest of the Cafe Husky sponsor list......... there aren't that many of the 610/630's out there so it's really nice when people make things for our bikes............

I looked at the Shinto tires, but I didn't see anything that would really suit my needs. I will be buying a Warp 9 set of SM wheels in a few months for highway duities, so I will be buying knobbies for the stock rims, in the OEM sizing.

Thanks for the pics, but do you have anything more specific of the screens on the sides? I don't want to go tearing into something and find out I took the wrong cover off...

I will probably be going to seat concepts since they are pretty local to me.

BTW, thanks for all the advice guys, keep it coming! I am actually heading to Lowes tomorrow for some trim, so I'll grab the chain lube while I'm there.

The previous owner was a crazy fabricator, so he TIG welded a 1.25" "extension" into the kick stand.

For the headlight, I may just fabricate something myself out of some TSX projectors and some kind of hand made lexan/plexi windshield. Shouldn't be an issue, I was just curious if there was an aftermarket available that wasn't all that expensive. But since I have a bunch of random projector housings laying around from misc retrofits, I'll just grab a couple of them and mock something up.

Now, on to the oil itself, is ester based oil, like Motul, ok for the trans? I'm planning on changing the oil soon and I want to do it right...

Totally separate question guys:

Does anyone make some kind of tuner or stand alone ECU that I can run that uses a wideband O2 sensor to do all the fuel/ignition mapping on the fly so I won't have to be constantly re-mapping the fuel/timing curves when I add mods? Preferably, something self learning...

Is anyone running the Power Commander w/ autotune? I was told it would make the bike run like crap by a shop that sells it...

I ended up ordering a set of Pirelli Scorpion Rally tires to hold me over until I can pick up a set of SM wheels and a set of Bridgestones...

Also, I have decided to do a retrofit with one of the Gixxer projector setups. Now I just need to find a motorcycle graveyard...

Just a though re: headlight. I'm impressed w/ the stock TE630 headlight (once adjusted correctly...it was aimed at the sky from the factory). Modern reflector design and 55/60w bulb. Don't know how hard it would be to retrofit, but would give a nice stock look IMO.

I can't vouch for the Autotune on these bikes, but the PC-V on my stock 630 worked great w/ no mods to the pre-installed map. I tried +/- 5% settings and it lost power both ways on the dyno. I think the Autotune module has been proven to work as advertised in many applications so not sure what the shop has seen, would be curious to know why they say that. When messing w/ my bike I did have problems at times w/ my stand-alone LM1 O2 sensor getting a reading (exhaust leak?/header cooling?/bad LM1?). If that was to hold true for the Autotune O2 sensor than I could see a problem. I was happy w/ just the PC-V so I didn't pursue the Autotune.

the kickstand mod is needed to keep the bike at a more reasonable lean angle, the crazies are the Husky engineers

before 8000 miles pull the clutch basket and check the spring end caps, 3 springs, 6 caps. They wear through and break up. change them out

get the toe shift lever washer from George at Uptite Racing, keeps shifter from rubbing case, http://www.uptitehusky.com/

check out the Renasco seat

change tires, oil and valves every 3000. It was nice of the engineers to make these things happen at the same time

dunlop 606 rear tire

Oh and there is a HID headlight mod writeup somewhere. You modify the stock light socket to fit a HID bulb. I think you use PVC pipe for it.

Well, I got the Seatconcepts seat, pretty cool guys there too! I just brought my seat down and they re-did it right there on the spot for me. Very cool indeed!

For the headlight, I see mixed reviews for the trailtech halogen headlight, and everywhere I call to get advice and order something knows NOTHING about how good the lights they sell are... I do a lot of night riding, and a good headlight is a must... I want to go HID, but I don't know if the OEM electronics can handle it, and if the stock housing will (1) hold up to the heat, and (2) actually focus the beam into something useable. I don't want to blow $250+ on a trailtach HID kit, or $100 for the standard halogen kit for them to be just as bad as the stock headlight... The sections of freeway I ride, there are very minimal street lights, so I need as much light output as I can get without completely blinding everyone else on the freeway... I also don't want to get hassled by the cops for having something outrageous. Can the stock electronics handle a 55W bulb?

The rear tire is in hand, but I am still waiting on the front. 4 weeks to order a tire is unacceptable! I won't be ordering anything else from Malcolm Smith Motorsports anymore... I'll just buy it off amazon!
